Still no ruling: O'Donovan awaits 'potentially lengthy' ban

Following a three-hour meeting on Tuesday night Football Federation Australia's independent disciplinary and ethics committee  agreed to "reserve" their ruling.

Committee chairman John Marshall SC told AAP: "This is a potentially lengthy sentence and we just need to be clear on our reasoning."

The Newcastle Jets attacker was sent off in injury time for a lunging boot kick to the jaw of Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas.

Thomas was floored by the contact and finished the match with his head swathed in bandages.

The Irishman's actions initiated a melee between the two sides, with referee Jarred Gillett immediately issuing a red card.

Victory won the Grand Final 1-0 with an offside goal.

It's not the first time the Irishman has copped a lengthy ban. In December 2015, while playing for the Central Coast Mariners, he headbutted Wellington Phoenix defender Manny Muscat and was later handed an eight-match ban.
