FORMER Socceroo Mark Bosnich says Adelaide United shot stopper Eugene Galekovic could still be Australia’s first choice keeper, despite not being selected for the squad against Germany.
The 29-year-old Reds keeper missed out on selection for the March 29 friendly as youngster Mitch Langerak was preferred to be Mark Schwarzer’s number two.
But Bosnich believes Galekovic is still a strong candidate and the finish of the A-League season worked against him.
“He shouldn’t read too much into it. The timing of the game didn’t help because he hasn’t played for a few weeks now and I think they wanted to try out a young keeper,” he told the Adelaide Advertiser.
“Galekovic is still a strong contender when the time is right. He’s been the most consistent keeper in the A-League for the past three seasons.”
The former Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa star also said he saw no problem with Galekovic taking up the captaincy left vacant by the departing Travis Dodd at Hindmarsh Stadium.
“He is one of the most consistent performers in the team and has the respect of his teammates,” Bosnich said.
