The mind games have started ahead of Wednesday night’s critical Olympics 2008 qualifier between Australia and Saudi Arabia.
Olyroo coach Rob Baan says the referee must clamp down on Saudi Arabia’s histrionics which he says will “disturb our rhythm”.
“What I hate, and like what we experienced against Jordan, is that when they're tackled [their players] fall down and cry and have to go to hospital but three seconds later they jump up.
“This disturbs our rhythm, and that is something we need to depend on the referee to control.
"We need to beat them… to play our normal game and play our tempo in the match but sometimes it is not possible.”
Saudi Arabia are top of the group on six points with Australia second on two following a home 1-1 scoreline against Jordan a fortnight ago and an away draw in Tehran.
Baan conceded the Aussies must take three points off the classy Saudis. “Yes it is a must-win game for us because of the last game against Jordan. Saudi Arabia have two wins in a row. What I have heard and seen they are a very good team.”
Strengthening the Australian side is the inclusion of four European based stars, including Birmingham City’s Neil Kilkenny and former A-League rising star winner Nick Ward of Brighton and Hove Albion. Baan says he now has some selection headaches of the good kind.
“For the first time I have a whole squad of 22. Kilkenny and Wardy are in and that makes the whole team stronger. Now I have some options if we need to change some things during the game.
“The bench is much stronger. I know I can change the game and I feel very confident when I look at my reserve players.”
The game will be played at Hindmarsh stadium.
Meanwhile, Baan has cautioned Olyroo Dario Vidosic about his move to Bundesliga club FC Nurnberg.
“I know they have promised him a first team chance but I know in my experience it will be a very big step for him to come into the first team, especially in the position he plays.
Nineteen-year-old Vidosic, who netted five times for Queensland Roar in his debut A-League season, reportedly impressed coach Hans Meyer during his two-week trial and was offered a three-year contract by the German club.
However, Baan added, “I had a long talk with Dario and he has some beautiful options with Nurnberg which is a great club for him."
