Ex-France striker Papin had only spent one season in charge, joining in May 2006, but took Racing up by finishing third in Ligue 2.

Strasbourg president Philippe Ginestet said on the club's official website: "Both parties agreed that conditions were not amicable enough to continue for another season.

"I would like to thank Jean-Pierre Papin for his time at RCS and wish him good luck for the continuation of his career."

Strasbourg was former European Footballer of the Year Papin's first coaching role with a professional club following a stint at amateur side FC Bassin d'Arcachon.

The 43-year-old scored 30 goals in 54 appearances for France and starred for AC Milan, Marseille and Bayern Munich in a 15-year career.
