Victory told au.fourfourtwo.com today that a new striker is still far from being finalised and that their search is continuing.

The season four A-League champions are keen to bolster their strike stocks ahead of the longest ever A-League season that will also run into Victory's 2011 Asian Champions League.

Names mentioned in the press as a potential A-League prospect from the Victoria Premier League include Northcote City's Trent Rixon.

And in the NSW Premier League, Sydney United's Elsid Barkhousir and Bonnyrigg's Brad Boardman have also been banging in the goals.

However, it seems likely both Victory and the sky blues will look overseas for their man.

The player both clubs really wanted was Dutchman Sergio van Dijk but the Roar striker signed with Adelaide United in the pre-season.

Sydney FC CEO Edwin Lugt stated at the launch of the Festival of Football last week that a new striker was still a few weeks away from being announced but didn't give any more information on the markets they were searching.

Sydney FC's Alex Brosque hopes whoever they find, he's a similar style player to van Dijk as the champions search for a foil to "Killer Bs" combination of Brosque and Mark Bridge.

"You need to vary things. We've got two similar strikers in myself and Bridgey and the logical thing is like last year with John Aloisi, someone who can hold the ball up," he told au.fourfourtwo.com.

"So I think they'll probably look to do something like that. A tall striker who can hold the ball up and lay it off. Just to bring something different to our game."

Brisbane Roar are also after a replacement hitman to fill the role left vacant by van Dijk.

Coach Ange Postecoglou admitted: "We still have a few additions to add to the squad.

"Currently we are still looking for a new striker and defender."

  • In other A-League transfer news, Melbourne Heart's Indian international trialist Gouramangi Singh's arrival has been delayed due to visa issues.  The defender was set to trial from June 7 for two weeks.
