However, the FA subsequently reviewed the incident and in a statement confirmed that the usual punishment for violent conduct of a three-match suspension is "insufficient" due to the extreme nature of the case.
 
Suarez, who has already been fined over the matter by Liverpool, has until 1800 GMT on Tuesday to respond to the charge.
 
The Uruguayan swiftly apologised for his actions in Sunday's game and claimed on Twitter that he had contacted Ivanovic to apologise to him personally.
