Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic and now faces a lengthy ban.
The incident took place in the 66th minute of the Premier League clash on Sunday as both players challenged for the ball in the penalty area, but it was originally missed by referee Kevin Friend and his assistants.
A last-minute header from the Uruguay international sealed a 2-2 draw for Brendan Rodgers' side, who are now seventh in the Premier League.
However, the FA subsequently reviewed the incident and in a statement confirmed that the usual punishment for violent conduct of a three-match suspension is "insufficient" due to the extreme nature of the case.
Suarez, who has already been fined over the matter by Liverpool, has until 1800 GMT on Tuesday to respond to the charge.
The Uruguayan swiftly apologised for his actions in Sunday's game and claimed on Twitter that he had contacted Ivanovic to apologise to him personally.
