The Uruguayan publicly declared his desire to leave Anfield for a club in the UEFA Champions League earlier this week, with Arsenal having recently lodged a bid worth £40million plus one pound.

Suarez had believed that offer would trigger a release clause in his contract, but Liverpool have strenuously denied those claims - a view since backed up by Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor.

And, though the 26-year-old has now claimed he hopes for an amicable end to his disagreement with the Merseyside club, he has reiterated his desire to leave.

"I'm still defending the colours of Liverpool and will continue to do so until the last minute," he told Marca.

"My aim is to reach an agreement with the club in a friendly manner and I hope the clause we agreed a year ago is fulfilled. Up to now, it hasn't been.

"I like things to be clear and a year ago I made my position to the club clear."

Suarez also issued a thinly-veiled come-get-me plea to Real Madrid, who have failed to follow up on their previously reported interest in the forward in order to pursue Tottenham's Gareth Bale.

"There were a lot of rumours (about Real) that were different to reality," he added. "Madrid never called me personally or Liverpool to try and negotiate.

"Every player aspires to reach the top and Real Madrid is among the most important clubs in the world. It would be very difficult to say no to Real Madrid."
