Sunderland secured an impressive 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Amsterdam tournament tonight thanks to two goals from Kieran Richardson.
The former Manchester United midfielder opened the scoring just before half-time from the penalty spot after Steed Malbranque was tripped by Juan Valera inside the area.
And Richardson doubled the Wearsiders' advantage with four minutes to go, coolly slotting home Carlos Edwards' pass from the edge of the area.
Atletico, fourth in La Liga last season, rarely threatened Martin Fulop's goal despite fielding Diego Forlan in the first half and Sergio Aguero after the break.
Benfica won the four-team tournament thanks to a 3-2 victory over Ajax tonight.
The result ensured the Portuguese side topped the table on 11 points, five more than Ajax and six more than Sunderland.
The hosts got off to the worst possible start when Ismail Aissati turned the ball into his own net in the eighth minute and Angel Di Maria doubled Benfica's lead on the half-hour mark.
Mitchell Donald pulled one back for Ajax on the stroke of half-time but David Luiz restored Benfica's two-goal advantage 10 minutes into the second half.
Dennis Rommedahl grabbed Ajax's second with 13 minutes to go but the Portuguese giants held on to clinch victory and the trophy.
