SUWON Samsung Bluewings defeated Incheon United 3-1 on Sunday to finish the regular K-League season in first place ahead of FC Seoul on goal difference.
Both teams clinched their places in the 2009 Asian Champions League as a result while the top six teams now enter a play-off series in which Suwon will have the advantage of waiting to see which of the other five they will face in the two-legged final.
Baek Ji-hoon fired Suwon into the lead midway through the first half, firing home a half-volley from just inside the area.
Hong Sun-hak took advantage of some slack Incheon defending to curl a low shot home from outside the area after 66 minutes.
Two minutes later, Bae Ki-jong danced through the Incheon backline and slotted past the goalkeeper from close range.
Incheon hit back through a Dzenan Radoncic penalty but it wasn't enough as their play-off dreams ended.
"We played well in the first half of the season and our injury problems in the second half gave opportunities to many other players," said Suwon coach Cha Bum-keun after the match.
"They all did well and we have been rewarded with first place but there is still work to do."
Seoul won 2-1 at the home of Pohang Steelers thanks to a first-half free-kick from Kim Chi-woo and a close range effort from Dejan Damjanovic.
Stevica Ristic powered home a header to reduce the deficit but Seoul took all three points.
"I was so happy in the first half with the players, they have tried so hard in the 26 games this season and I would like to thank them for their efforts," said Seoul boss Senol Gunes.
Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors leapfrogged Incheon into sixth to take the final play-off spot. The 2006 Asian Champions League winners came back from a goal down to defeat Gyeongnam FC 3-1.
Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma finished third with a 1-0 win at Daegu FC while Ulsan Hyundai Horang-I clinched fourth with a victory over Busan I'Park by the same scoreline.
In the first round of the play-offs, Seongnam host Jeonbuk while Pohang travel to Ulsan. The winners meet for the right to take on Seoul and the winner of that match will meet Suwon in a two-legged final.
