SYDNEY FC look set to lose out to a second Welsh club after Swansea City revealed they were interested in signing John Aloisi.
The League One side is lining up the Socceroo as a possible replacement striker after they sold the club’s top scorer, Lee Trundle, to Bristol City.
They are also interested in Aston Villa’s Luke Moore – but may baulk at the transfer fee required to get him away from the Birmingham side.
But Aloisi, 31, would be available for free after the Aussie’s contract with Spanish club Alaves expired earlier this year.
Sydney FC have been in talks with Aloisi about joining the club as their marquee for the coming A-League season but couldn’t agree on a salary with the veteran star.
“We will never panic buy and we will not bring someone in just for the sake of it,” said Swansea manager Roberto Martinez.
“I have huge confidence in my squad and we will see if we need to strengthen. The performances of the boys already here will tell us that."
There was renewed speculation at the weekend that Sydney still hoped to sign the star who scored against Japan in the Asian Cup.
But sources close to the player last week told au.fourfourtwo.com he was turning down all A-League offers to return to play in Europe or the UK.
The South Wales Evening Post revealed Aloisi and Moore were City targets – and highlighted Aloisi as the more likely signing.
Martinez told the paper: “We didn't want to sell Lee, but he felt he had a unique opportunity and put in a transfer request and you can't keep players who don't want to be at the club.
“We wish him all the best but we have to move on now. The timing of it is a knock to us, and that is why everybody at Swansea City needs to unite and show what a big club we are.”
He added: “We need to try to turn this into a positive because looking back is not going to get us anywhere.
“We have to be brave, come together as players, management and fans and look to the future.”
Another Sydney FC marquee target, Robbie Fowler, opted for Wales over Australia when he signed up to Cardiff City earlier this month.
