Sweden took an experienced squad to the finals and after failing to make it out of Group D, a new generation is now expected to establish themselves.

However, veteran striker Henrik Larsson felt last night's 2-0 defeat to Russia in Innsbruck would not be his last game for Sweden, and Mellberg is also willing to continue.

Mellberg, who joins Juventus from Aston Villa this summer, said: "When you lose, go out of a tournament or struggle, it is disappointing but I always felt it is an honour to play for the national team. You want to pay back everything the nation has given you.

"So it's just a case of fighting back, and if the manager picks me, I'll be there to give 100%.

"We've always had a few changes in the squad, from qualification to the championships. We've got a fairly old squad but I think there are quite a few years left in quite a few of us.

"Experience is important but obviously you need some younger blood as well."

Skipper Freddie Ljungberg felt his team-mates tired against the passing game of Russia last night.

The West Ham winger said: "Russia kept the ball on the floor, and when the games come thick and fast, people get tired and cannot run as much. It's something we can learn from."
