With Donovan and MLS leading goalscorer Buddle having joined the 30-man USA extended World Cup squad at the training camp in New Jersey, Galaxy boss Bruce Arena saw Mike Magee fill the breach for last season's losing MLS Cup finalists with a 17th-minute goal in Texas.

That stretched the Los Angeles lead at the top of the Western Conference to 16 points over the Houston Dynamo, who play at the weekend.

In New York, the Red Bulls could not turn their dominance over the Columbus Crew into goals as they went down 3-1 at home to their still unbeaten Eastern Conference rivals.

The home side hit the woodwork three times at Red Bull Arena but saw Columbus claim their first away win of the season after former New York player Eddie Gaven and Englishman Andy Iro gave the Ohio side a 2-0 lead with first-half headers.

The Red Bulls pressed hard for a way back into the game with Sinisa Ubiparipovic having hit a post in the 36th minute and Dane Richards and Juan Pablo Angel following him by finding the uprights after the break.

New York did get a deserved breakthrough in the 81st minute when substitute Tony Tchani headed home, only to see Columbus hit back within two minutes after Crew substitute Emilio Renteria finished off a counter-attack to seal the three points and send the visitors top of the Eastern Conference with two games in hand over the Red Bulls.
