MAN of the match Hakan Yakin took great delight in helping Switzerland conclude their Euro 2008 campaign on a high by inflicting a first defeat of the tournament on a much-changed Portugal side last night.
The Young Boys midfielder struck twice in the second half - the latter from the penalty spot - to secure three points as the co-hosts bowed out in style and ended the seven-year tenure of coach Kobi Kuhn on a winning note.
"First I have to compliment the team," said Yakin, who also notched Switzerland's only other goal of the competition in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Turkey.
"We played very well in our first two games but were unlucky to lose."
The Euro 2008 finals have been a troubled affair for the Swiss, with Kuhn's wife hospitalised just prior to the tournament after suffering an epileptic fit and star striker Alexander Frei ruled out of the competition in the opening match.
Kuhn's team knew before the clash at Basle's St Jakob-Park that they would finish bottom of Group A regardless of the result, but Yakin was thrilled to give the coach a decent send-off.
"We kept our spirits high and basically won 2-0 with our hands down to give Kobi Kuhn a great farewell," he said.
The Swiss players unfurled a banner saying 'Merci Kobi' on their lap of honour in recognition of the 64-year-old's work.
"There's no better way to end Kobi Kuhn's reign as coach, and also give something back to the fans who have backed us throughout this week."
Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari made eight changes to his starting line-up from the side that won the opening two games to secure top spot in the pool and a quarter-final berth.
Only goalkeeper Ricardo and defenders Paulo Ferreira and Pepe were retained, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Nuno Gomes, Simao Sabrosa and Joao Moutinho on the bench.
Scolari admitted his side had missed Brazil-born Deco's creativity in midfield.
"I didn't change the tactics," he said.
"But what we don't have is (another) midfielder that can be compared to Deco.
"Even having made those changes, the team played well - they created a few opportunities but weren't successful."
