The move comes after Sydney finished a poor fifth on the A-League ladder  with just seven wins from their 21 games and a reported rift with $1.4 million marquee star John Aloisi.

It was the first time the club has failed to make the finals in its short history and worse even than derided ex-Sydney coach Terry Butcher's stint at the club in season two who still made the finals even with a three point deduction and no marquee star.

“Sydney FC would like to thank John for his contribution to the club over the last 15 months,” said Sydney FC CEO Stefan Kamasz. “We would like to wish John all the best in his future endeavours.”

Kosmina was tipped for the axe after the exit of Frank Lowy as owner and Andrew Kemeny as chairman following the sale of a majority holding in the club to Russian David Trakovenko and hsi son-in-law Scott Barlow.

However the new pair - who officially take control in March - insisted Kosmina's future with the club was safe and a strong case was made for holding onto Kosmina to maintain a rare stability at the club.

But a growing anomosity between Kosmina and Aloisi - who are understood to not even be on speaking terms - may have accelerated the coach's departure.

Ultimately the situation appeared to demand the exit of one or the other - and Kosmina could have been the cheaper option for the club with both still having a year left to run on their contracts.

While initially Kosmina was popular at Sydney FC after he replaced Culina, and guided the club to third at the end of the season, the club crashed straight out of the finals in a 2-0 minor semi-final aggregate loss to Queensland Roar.

Even worse was to come in the 2008/09 season despite the arrival of stars including John Aloisi, Mark Bridge and Stuart Musialik, with FC missing the post-season for the first time and Aloisi in particular failing to impress.

Kosmina turned to a group of youngsters in the final rounds of the season and unveiled some impressive players like Kofi Danning, who showed plenty of promise, following the season-long efforts of fellow young gun Shannon Cole.

But it was all too little, too late for the former Socceroo, who was also later an assistant to Australian head coaches Guus Hiddink and then Graham Arnold during the 2006 World Cup finals and 2007 Asian Cup respectively.

Now the club will be hunting its fifth coach in five seasons to launch its next campaign.

A club statement from the club added: "Sydney FC and John Kosmina have today mutually agreed to a termination of the Sydney FC Coach’s contract, effective immediately.

"Sydney FC will make an announcement in the coming days regarding the Coach for the 2009/10 Hyundai A-League season."
