Despite leading the game for a good portion of the match, Roar could not hold on for any points after another impressive performance in the fledgling competition.

Roar boys started strongly and had the best opening opportunity of the match when Tyler Thurtell was brought down just outside the box after seven minutes.

Captain Adam Sarota stepped up to take the free-kick which deflected away for a corner and the resultant kick ended with a Tim Smits diving header going just wide of the mark.

Sean Rooney had Sydney’s first opportunity three minutes later when he also headed wide from a corner.

The wet pitch was making life difficult for the players, but Josh McVey read the conditions perfectly for the game’s opening goal after a raking long ball from defender Michael Ryan.

The ball landed inside the Sydney box and with neither defenders nor goalkeeper making a move for the ball McVey snuck through and controlled ball beautifully, Ivan Necevski parried his first attempt but from an acute angle McVey slotted his second National Youth League goal.

Sydney turned up the pressure on the away team after going behind with Ryan and Michael Angus both clearing goal-bound shots off the line while Daniel Bowles was required to make a goal-saving tackle in the box.

Six minutes before the break Kofi Danning’s long range shot skimmed the top of the bar for Sydney, but Roar held onto the lead into the break.

Sydney were again prominent early in the second half with Matt Acton in the Roar goal forced into a fingertip save from the home side’s Sean Rooney.

Adam Biddle then shot wide under pressure from Mitchell Bevan as Sydney sought to level the match up.

Queensland continued to soak up the Sydney pressure with an hour gone as the Blues pushed forward in numbers with Rhyan Grant shooting over the bar from just on the penalty spot on 62 minutes.

Eventually the Roar defence cracked when they failed to clear a ball in the box with Biddle finally putting the ball past Acton to draw the sides level.

Sydney’s goal opened the game up with the Roar finally putting together some prolonged possession and on 75 minutes McVey sprung the Sydney offside trap, but was foiled by a smart save from replacement keeper Vedran Janjetovic.

The home side immediately broke to the other end and substitute Chris Payne found himself one-on-one with Acton and slipped the ball into the bottom corner.

Adam Sarota nearly netted an equaliser at the death with a great header which was saved by Janjetovic while in stoppage time at the other end Biddle was denied a second by Acton.

Youth League coach said the experience of playing at the Sydney Football Stadium would be positive for his players despite the defeat.

"There are a lot of positives," Vidosic said. "These boys are probably three or four years younger than their opponents.

"I’m very, very proud of my boys and their achievements."
