As for FIFA 14, a ramped up reality engine that's been two years in the making is the headline improvement being worked on by the gameplay team.

“Precision Movement” technology is set to one of the big selling points for FIFA 14, say the game-play gurus at EA.

As players accelerate and decelerate, they will plant their feet more realistically, shifting momentum like a real footballer.

Aaron McHardy, lead gameplay producer on FIFA 14, explained that this innovation, which has taken two years to refine, will transform the next version of the game.

“FIFA 14 is kind of ground-breaking. We’re making a lot of changes this year – especially precision movement," he said.

"It really changes the way the game feels. We’ve taken out the foundation of the game and replaced it with an even better system for how players can run around the pitch.

“That’s the biggest change."

Recently  au.fourfourtwo.com got its hands on a beta version of the upcoming FIFA 14, which is 60 percent built, and the Precision Movement rebuild does give the game a more lifelike feel.

“Players will need to think about their momentum a lot more than they did in previous versions so right off the bat when you pick up the game, that’s what’s going to make it feel different,” added McHardy, a  former Jamaican international.

Aside from this locomotion enhancement, shooting has also been made more life-like with the intelligence to adjust stride, position and angle to get the best shot off.

FIFA 14 is also working on implementing smarter defensive thinking and new attacking run types.

And in midfield, improved technology to fend off defenders and protect the ball allows better control of the game and ability to carve out opportunities going forward.

“Some of the feedback we got was that people perhaps wanted more of a midfield battle and in last year’s game a lot of open space was on the pitch,” said McHardy.

“So we’ve now gone back and reworked the game in terms of our “teammate intelligence” feature on how players mark their opponents and how much better they’ll track their runs.

“And after that we’ve worked on adding things such as push-pull and second chance tackles, so there’s a whole bunch of tools we’re adding to the defensive side of the game this year to try keep it in balance.”

Second chance tackles feature has been extended  to enable defenders to combine different types of tackles, recover from missed tackles quickly, and have a second chance to compete for the ball in any tackling situation.

“So the net result,” said McHardy, “is we’re getting something that’s a little more realistic to the real world of football and little more focused on the build-up of opportunities so when you do get that opportunity, the emotion of scoring that goal is elevated.”

Other improvements being worked on for FIFA 14 include:

·         Sprint Dribble Turns— Utilize quick, explosive cuts and turns to beat defenders one-on-one while sprinting with the ball. Players can move in any direction, preserving their natural momentum and maintaining possession of the ball.

·         Variable Dribble Touches— The First Touch Control of dribbling varies a player’s touch when dribbling with pace.  Skilled players have the touch and control to stand out while less skilled players will experience fewer perfect touches and more uncertainty dribbling, creating opportunities for defenders to win back possession, and placing emphasis on building play through midfield.

·         Curling Lofted Through Balls—Players have the ability to curl the ball around opponents to deliver precision passes to teammates or send the ball into space.

·         Skill Games–A competitive practice mode that enable players to learn or master the fundamental skills necessary to compete at FIFA 14.  Become a better player, faster, no matter what your skill level, competing against yourself or friends in all-new mini-games.

·         Career Mode— Search for talent year-round with the new Global Scouting Network that brings the world of professional scouting to life. Develop and refine your own scouting network. Evaluate footballers to uncover the attributes of players who could bolster your squad during the transfer windows. A new hub delivers easy navigation, fewer interruptions and live scouting reports.

·         Complete Authenticity—All the authenticity EA SPORTS is known for with officially licensed clubs, leagues and more than 15,000 players.
