The versatile utilityman was this week convicted of assault and fined $1150 after a late-night incident in a restaurant in February when he punched a customer.

But Sydney coach John Kosmina has admitted he's ready to take the 25 year old under his wing as he aims to plug the gaps left by recent departures.

The loss of Ruben Zadkovich to Derby County in the UK and defender Mark Rudan and holding midfielder Ufuk Talay to Avispa Fukuoka in Japan plus Socceroo Mark Milligan have left Sydney needing an adaptable linkman.

"Mitchell is someone we've had discussions with, and it may be we will be able to tie up a deal sooner rather than later," Kosmina told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"What I like about him is he can play in midfield, at right back, or in the centre of defence. We are light on at the back, and he gives us options.

"Obviously we've got Jake [Timpano] coming back, but he's missed a lot of football over the last few years so he has a fair bit of catching up to do."

Prentice is currently a free agent after rejecting a new offer from Glory and could join Sydney in time for pre-season training on April 28.

Sydney are also believed to be looking closely at signing up local players Shannon Cole at Sydney Olympic, Joey Schirripa at Manly United or Bruno Salas at Blacktown City.
