EXCLUSIVE: Sydney FC have firmly denied very strong rumours that club-less Socceroo legend Harry Kewell will be unveiled as a Sydney FC signing at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.
The Socceroo legend has flown back into Australia from his base in England to fulfil sponsorship duties with clotheswear company Politix and has been linked with an A-League return.
Kewell has been unable to find a new club since leaving Australia to return to England for family reasons, a move which has since cost him his place in the Socceroos.
Melbourne Victory's new coach Ange Posecoglou has ruled out bringing their former marquee star back to the club and a move to Melbourne Heart is also believed to be unlikely.
Western Sydney Wanderers would seem the natural fit given the player is from Smithfield in Sydney’s West and the club are desperate for new attacking talent.
But today well-placed sources insisted Sydney FC will unveil the former Liverpool, Leeds and Melbourne Victory star before Sunday’s game against Perth Glory.
The player was tipped to be signing a salary cap deal which would only net Kewell a modest wage but would get him back playing and enhance his chance of a Socceroo return and a possible place at the 2014 World Cup.
However, a statement today from Sydney FC appeared to pour cold water on the rumours.
“No one from Sydney FC has spoken to Harry Kewell and Harry’s name has not been mentioned internally in relation to playing for Sydney FC,” the club told au.fourfourtwo.com today.
If Kewell did sign for the Sky Blues, it would be a coup for a star-studded side slowly starting to hit its straps this season.
Kewell, Brett Emerton and Jason Culina in the midfield is a trio with World Cup and big club experience and ideal for supplying even better service to Del Piero.
