Sydney FC have eased through to the FFA Cup semi-finals after an opening quarter salvo helped them to a straight-forward 3-0 victory over Blacktown City.
Filip Holosko and David Carney struck in the first 26 minutes of the all-NSW quarter-final to put the Sky Blues in control at the Sydney United Sports Centre.
Once they took the early lead the A-League club never looked like relinquishing it, and new Brazilian Bobo added the third and final goal in the second half. Bobo was lively, picking up two assists to go with his first goal for his new club.
Sydney FC fielded a strong line-up with fellow new recruits Josh Brillante, Michael Zullo and Danny Vukovic also starting against the NSW NPL grand final winners. Alex Brosque, Milos Dimitrijevic and Matthew Jurman were all on the bench.
In the 11th minute Blacktown keeper Nenad Vekic made a good stop to push David Carney’s low shot away. But two minutes later the Sky Blues opened the scoring after the Demons coughed up possession again cheaply.
Bobo whipped in a pin-point cross and Filip Holosko was on hand to tuck the ball away at the near post. Sydney FC then went 2-0 ahead in the 26th minute with a sensational second goal.
Rhyan Grant’s cross from the right was met by a header from Bobo on to Carney who volleyed it spectacularly past Vekic. The A-League outfit were dominating possession and the Demons were chasing shadows.
Blacktown City did not have a shot on goal in the first half until former Sydney FC forward Mitch Mallia struck Vukovic’s left post in the 45th minute. The two goal buffer remained the same going into the second half.
In the 69th minute Bobo lashed a shot past Vekic’s goal. Three minutes later Holosko headed over the bar from close range.
In the 75th minute Grant spurned a great chance to make it 3-0 by blazing over the Blacktown City goal. But the pressure was building and Bobo would not be denied three minutes later. Zullo squared the ball across the face of the box for the South American to tap in easily.
In the 80th minute Danny Choi almost pulled a goal back with an audacious effort from 65 metres out. Choi fired a free kick over Vukovic's goal in the dieing stages of the match.
In the other FFA Cup quarter-final this evening Melbourne City defeated Western Sydney 4-1 at AAMI Park.
