The A-League premiers have reportedly offered the 31-year-old ex-Reading and Cardiff City man a three-year deal.

Le Fondre requested to leave Bolton on Tuesday, with the club reluctantly granting him permission and confirming his exit on Tuesday night.

"Le Fondre has been given permission by Bolton Wanderers Football Club to speak with a club overseas regarding a possible transfer after being presented with an “opportunity of a lifetime”," the club wrote in a statement.

"Taking all factors into consideration, Bolton have reluctantly agreed to allow the player to leave to pursue his ambitions."

Le Fondre, who has spent most of his career in England's second tier, has scored 177 career league goals.

He netted seven goals in 35 appearances in the Championship for Bolton last term.

His former clubs include Bolton, Wigan, Wolverhampton, Cardiff, Reading, Rotherham, Rochdale and Stockport.

Sydney have three visa spots currently available, following the departures of Bobo, Adrian Mierzejewski and Jordy Buijs.

The Sky Blues, under new coach Steve Corica, have only added Daniel De Silva and Trent Buhagiar this off-season.

Bolton boss Phil Parkinson shed further light on the situation when speaking following the side's midweek League Cup match.

“I was genuinely surprised when Alfie came to see me yesterday but he’s got a once in a lifetime opportunity for himself and his family and he asked if we’d let him go,” he said.

“I had no inkling at all. I thought when he came to see me that he was going to discuss the team at Leeds. But he said he’d been offered three-year deal and could we let him go.

“I spoke to the chairman and we agreed. I’d have liked it to be last week when he came to see us but Alfie has been a good servant to the club, trained very well, a good professional, so we didn’t want to stand in his way."
