Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque says victory over Melbourne City in tonight's game will send a message to A-League rivals that a second Premiers Plate title is their's for the taking.
After 10 rounds of the A-League, Sydney FC are top with 25 points with second placed Newcastle Jets (20) and third placed Melbourne City (19) chasing.
If the Sky Blues can secure the three points over City in front of their home fans at Allianz stadium the gap will be increased even further.
No team in the history of the A-League has topped the league two seasons in a row and Brosque said beating City would send reverberations around the league.
"After last weekend's game against the Wanderers we’re already talking about what a similar result against Melbourne City would do psychologically to the rest of the league," he said speaking exclusively to FourFourTwo.
"On the weekend, everything just came together. We knew that it has been building and that it would happen eventually and it couldn’t have happened in a bigger game.
"So, it has given us a big kick and a lot of energy going into this week’s game against Melbourne City.
"More so for the message it sends out to everyone else. That in a derby we can come up with that sort of result, and follow that up against teams that are chasing us.
"So, if we can put in a similar performance and get a similar result. That would definitely send some shockwaves through the league."
Brosque said the major obstacle the squad has faced this term is ignoring their history-making campaign and being focused on this season.
He revealed the loss against Central Coast did that.
"The loss against the Mariners really shook us," he said. "It let us know really early on that the A-League is a tough competition and you really need to be at, or close, to your best every week if you are going to win.
"So, we have forgotten last year and we don't talk about last year and that was the challenge. If we were able to do that, then the squad that we have is good enough to do what we are currently doing anyway."
Even though Sydney are ahead of their points tally from last season, Brosque said the Sky Blues aren't getting too ahead of themselves.
"It’s very important we don’t make last weekend's win a one off," he said.
"We aren't thinking ‘oh its ok, we’ve got another 10 games we can do it’.
"We are definitely aiming at maintaining that now and not letting up. If you let points start to slip then teams can catch you very quickly.
"So, we want to try and build as big a lead as possible. We've got the Asian Champions League coming up which will be a testing period for us, so the better that we can be until that point will make it a lot easier for what is coming up."
