The experienced centre-back will join the Sky Blues as an injury replacement for Pascal Bosschaart who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a heel injury.

Calvano, 31, started training with the Sky Blues today ahead of Saturday afternoon’s clash with Wellington Phoenix at Allianz Stadium.

Sydney’s defensive stocks have been ravaged by injury with Bosschaart joining Adam Griffiths and Nathan Sherlock on the treatment tables.

Coach Frank Farina welcomed the arrival of the Brazilian as the harbour-siders seek to turn around their disappointing season.

“We have had a few injuries at the back and we were getting a little thin so having him here gives us more options and depth in defence,” Farina said.

Calvano said he enjoyed his time at the Jets and was looking forward to the new challenge.

“I’m very happy to be here at Sydney FC,” he said. “I look forward to start playing and helping my new club and team mates.

“I think this is a great opportunity for my career. Sydney FC is a good club and Sydney is a beautiful city. I hope I can prove to the club what I can do.”

Calvano joined the Jets ahead of the 2011/12 season and featured in 28 matches during that campaign.

But he has been used sparingly this season making just seven appearances. He scored his first A-League goal away to Perth Glory in Round 5 but has struggled for game time since.

“We are very grateful for everything that Tiago has done for the Newcastle Jets, both on and off the field,” Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said.

“While we have decided to go our separate ways, we’re happy that he has been able to secure a contract at Sydney FC.

“Tiago is a talented footballer and a great person who still has plenty to offer.

"It is pleasing he has joined Sydney FC and will remain in the A-League for at least the remainder of this season."

Jets coach Gary van Egmond thanked Calvano for his contribution to the Hunter outfit.

"Tiago has shown great leadership during his time at the Jets and he has contributed significantly to the culture we are building at the Jets," van Egmond said.

"He has been excellent in regards to his mentoring of the younger players, especially some of the ones coming through now.

"The Club is better for Tiago being here and we wish him every success in the future."

The Sky Blues have conceded 33 goals this season, easily the worst defensive record in the A-League, and sit just one point above last-placed Wellington.
