SYDNEY FC stepped up their courting of Italian legend Alessandro del Piero overnight in a two hour series of video chats to sell him the Aussie lifestyle.
The A-League side are desperate to bring the veteran Down Under as their new marquee for next season following the departure of Nick Carle on loan to the Middle East.
But while they are unlikely to be able to match the megamoney on offer elsewhere, they hope the lure of Sydney's sun, sea and sand - and the chance to leave a permanent impact on the sport locally - could push them over the line.
Chief Executive Tony Pignata admitted this morning: “Overnight we had two video conferences lasting about two hours discussing the possibility of bringing Alessandro Del Piero to Sydney FC for the 2012/13 season
“Alessandro Del Piero is one of the true legends of football and there is no doubt that if he was to come to Sydney FC it would be huge, not only for our club and the Sydney football community, but for the whole A-League.
“We spoke about football, as well as the Sydney lifestyle and the ability for him to leave a lasting legacy in the game. We presented him with what we think is a good package and we should get an answer within 48 hours.”
The club are said to have tabled a $2million deal compared with a reported $8million on offer in the MLS and Switzerland.
Pignata had earlier told au.fourfourtwo.com: “Financially I think we’ve got a good offer.
"It might not be the best he’s ever seen but Alessandro can leave a footprint or a legacy, if you will, in Australian football for years to come.
“What he can do for football in Australia, we’re hoping that it’s something that appeals to him.
"It’s a six months deal where he can either spend it in a Sydney summer or a European winter, and I know where I’d rather spend it. It is from a lifestyle point of view as well.
"And there is a massive Italian community not only in Sydney but across Australia.
“What we’ve seen on social media with the story just shows you… it would be a massive coup for the A-League - but it’s tough."
He added: “We’ve come in at the last time and he [Del Piero] has a firm offer from Sion. There are two days till the transfer window closes there but here it’s different.
"But if he wants to play in Europe he’s got two days to decide. There is urgency in that respect.
“I’m not a betting man but I’m going to give it my best shot and in the Italian language.
“I’m going to give it a red-hot go. I don’t want to die wondering. If we succeed it’ll be massive. If we don’t we walk away and say we did our best.”
