Former Polish international Maciej Szczesny has spoken of the difficult situation facing Wojciech after his red card their 1-1 draw in Warsaw on Friday.

The Arsenal shot-stopper was given his marching orders by referee Carlos Velasco Carballo for bringing down Dimitris Salpingidis in the 68th minute.

His replacement Przemyslaw Tyton proceded to save the subsequent penalty, as the co-hosts settled for a point.

Szczesny senior, who was capped seven times during the 1990s, insisted that his son has the character to turn the situation around.

"It's clear, that Wojciech is now in a difficult situation. He knows that it was not his best game, and he will not play in the next game (against Russia)," the 46-year-old told TVN 24.

"(He may) lose his place in the national team, (but) I think he has a strong character."

Szczesny Snr also spoke about PSV goalkeeper Tyton after his penalty save ensured Franciszek Smuda's men took a point in Warsaw.

"Fortunately he saved the penalty. This has made him and the whole team stronger. He will now get the feeling that he was the hero of the opening game - it will make him mentally stronger," he said.
