Taggart tweaked his hamstring after landing awkwardly when he jumped up to head the ball.

The forward was carried from the field by his teammates at the end of the session after hitting the turf this morning. The full severity of the injury is not yet known, but he is unlikely to be risked on the trip across the Tasman.

Perth coach Kenny Lowe was staying calm after training.

“He just felt his hammy was tight so we’ll check it out, see how it goes,” he said.

“We’ve got 23 players in this group. If one opportunity does materialize it’s an opportunity for someone to step in. It’s not perfect but at the end of the day everyone’s looking forward to play football, so it opens the door for somebody.

“He might be alright. If he’s alright, it’s cool. If he’s not well we’ll look at it over the next day or so.”

Asked about Taggart’s record with injury, Lowe responded: “He’s been with us for two years and he’s been perfect. He just couldn’t play for six months because he was suspended.

“He scored a shitload of goals last year, he’s scoring goals this year, so I think he’s in the best place he’s ever been. I don’t think he’s got a problem," Lowe said.

Perth have secured two wins and a draw after five rounds of the A-League. Lowe is confident his team is in a good frame of mind heading to New Zealand.

“We’re buoyant, we’re scoring goals, we’re really upbeat and focused to go over there and hopefully get three points,” he said.

Wellington have yet to win a game in this A-League season and sit on the bottom of the table. They will also be without Michael McGlinchey and Andrew Durante because of international duty.

But the Englishman still believes the Phoenix will be a tough proposition.

“It doesn’t matter, everybody’s got a squad,” Lowe said.

“Everyone’s got players and all players want to play, so if people are out then someone else comes in. It doesn’t really matter. In the A-League the squads are so balanced, everyone’s recruited really well.

“They’ve got foreign players that are excellent. So they’re going to be a tough side and they play a good brand of football as well. It’s going to be a hard game, notwithstanding they’re good at home.”
