Tanaka, making his return from injury, gave Holger Osieck's side a fifth-minute lead as the frontman fired home Washington's pass from the edge of the area.

Tokyo attempted to respond through Norio Suzuki, who enjoyed a speedy and powerful performance, but the 23-year-old forward lacked the finishing touch.

The Reds doubled their lead on 66 minutes when Tokyo's Brazilian forward Lucas attempted to clear Yuki Abe's header, but only managed to divert the ball into his own goal as Urawa extended their unbeaten run to seven games.

"I'd like to congratulate our players, who produced a wonderful performance," said Osieck.

"They had good build-up, discipline as well as spirit and concentration for the full 90 minutes.

"Tatsuya played very well and scored a goal for us. I hope he will remain injury free and play as good as he did before he got injured."

Tanaka added: "I was happy as I scored. I just tried to do as much as I could since I had been away from the game for so long.

"I'd like to play more games consistently and do well for our team."

The Reds remain in second-place in the league, four points adrift of leaders Gamba Osaka with a game in hand after the table-toppers claimed a 3-1 victory over Nagoya Grampus Eight on Saturday.

In Chiba, Japan midfielder Naotake Hanyu's 71st minute strike saw JEF United Chiba claim their first win in five games with a 3-2 victory over Ventforet Kofu.

Japan forward Seiichiro Maki handed the home side a 2-1 half-time lead, but Katsuya Ishihara pulled his side level nine minutes before the hour mark with his second of the contest.
