The season's new signing from rivals Sydney FC has been granted permission to leave Australia for 10 days to see a specialist over his nagging ankle injury.

The 34 year old will miss this weekend's clash in New Zealand against Wellington Phoenix and is unlikely to feature in the December 18 home game against Brisbane Roar.

Depending on the success of his rehab, he may be ready to face Melbourne Victory on December 28.

A club statement added: "Central Coast Mariners can today confirm that midfielder, Mickaƫl Tavares has sustained an ankle injury and has been granted permission to return to Europe complete his rehabilitation.

"The Mariners will allow Tavares to spend 10 days in Europe with a specialist that he has worked with previously in a bid to return to the Central Coast ready to play.

"The 34-year-old midfielder was kept sidelined on Saturday against the Western Sydney Wanderers due to his ankle injury."
