Terry was sacked after allegations of an affair with the former girlfriend of Wayne Bridge. Bridge, now at Manchester City, is an England team-mate of Terry and a former club-mate at Chelsea.

Taylor, the chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association, told Press Association Sport: "I think it was right for the manager to make the decision as it was as if both players were at the same club.

"Because he is England captain and they are both members of the England squad then I feel the FA were correct in leaving it to Fabio.

"He would have spoken with both parties and we have to respect that decision. It has to be hoped that now this has happened it will take the steam out of the situation and we can focus on football matters.

"We have to make sure that both players, who could be in his squad, reach a situation where they can move on."

Terry said he would "continue to give everything for England" and Taylor added: "He will feel the manager has sound reasons for taking this action.

"I would imagine it is to take the heat out of the situation. However everyone would have lived with the decision whether he (Capello) would have kept things or changed them."

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is promoted from vice-captain and will replace Terry in World Cup year.

Taylor insists it is time for unity during a crucial spell for the national side.

He said: "Rio has experience but it is the job of everyone to pull behind the manager and the coach.

"At England's level you expect everyone to be a captain out there on the field."
