The TeleChoice Premier League Championship Series is down to three teams, and somewhat fittingly, the Top-Three sides from the regular season will challenge for Grand-Final victory.
One certainty for the CUA Stadium in Penrith’s Grand-Final will be Wollongong FC. The Wolves overcame another daunting trip to Sutherland’s Seymour Shaw in the Major semi-final – this time John Turner’s men returned to the ‘gong’ as victors.
Wollongong FC came from a goal down in a tiring performance to send the match into extra-time before ‘go to man’ Ilija Prenzoski, as he has done so many times already this season, scored the winner with only 4’ minutes remaining.
Jim Bakis hit the Sharks ahead after 10’ minutes with a thunderous effort following tremendous hassle by Brad Boardman on the by-line. Boardman’s cross into the path of Bakis provided the midfielder a wonderful chance; one that he took with a clinical finish.
Despite the match not living up to expectations, in-terms of the nerves showed by both sets of players, Wollongong FC did make a match of it from the 66’ minute as Matt Bailey drew the sides level.
With the scores level after 90’ minutes, extra-time was required to determine which side would qualify for the grand-final. Despite the dominance in additional time by the Sharks, the Wolves prevailed with a late effort courtesy of Prenzoski’s boot. The striker’s instinctive effort as he played the ball over his shoulder and across goalkeeper Phillip Zabaks and inside the far post brought scenes of emotion and ecstasy as Wollongong FC finally got one over Sutherland Sharks.
The Premiers will now meet Sydney Olympic for the right to a re-match with the Wolves as the Blues disposed of Manly United at Belmore Sports Ground.
Without the likes of Anthony Hartshorn and Roger Galayini, the Blues welcomed back Michael Herbert following a period on the sidelines due to injury. The shot-stopper – suffering the effects of the flu – was in great form as he denied a brave Manly United onslaught in the second-half.
Paul Wither had the Blues ahead just after the half hour mark as the attacking midfielder half-volleyed a Chris Triantis cross from the right.
Michael Lloyd-Green tapped in from close-range after the break – following two point-blank saves by Herbert – to give Manly every chance of making a fight of it, though Sydney Olympic delivered the knock-out punch moments after the hour mark in a carbon copy of their opening goal. Chris Triantis provided the free-kick from the right and Paul Wither hit a volley on the turn – slotting the ball past the outstretched Manly United goalkeeper Brad Swancott.
In the Grade 20 division, Sydney Olympic became the first side to reach the Grand-Final with an impressive defeat of Maroni at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday. Steven Koops grabbed a brace and Jin Kim added a single effort.
Sydney Olympic will face the winner of Manly United and Marconi in the CUA Stadium Grand-Final on September 7.
Manly ended Sutherland's campaign with an comfortable 2-0 win. Luke Reading scoring both goals.
