A series of shock results greeted the TeleChoice Premier League last weekend as the pre-season form guide certainly did tell a different story.
Following the exploits of a near perfect Johnny Warren Cup campaign, winners Sydney Olympic will be under pressure to make amends to their surprise start to the Premier League.
The Blues first home match of the season on Saturday evening is a must win encounter – simply to demonstrate that the Round 1 clash against West Sydney Berries was an ‘off day’.
Lining-up opposite Milan Blagojevic’s side will be Wollongong FC – a side with much to prove this season after a final flurry in the last campaign secured the side the Tiger Turf Cup and an impressive run towards the Premier League final-series, only to be denied a spot amongst the top-four by the poor start they had made to the campaign.
At Penrith’s CUA Stadium, Penrith-Nepean United will be looking to take huge morale from their opening match draw against Wollongong FC.
Penrith-Nepean face the unbeaten over ninety minutes - between the League and Pre-Season Cup – Sutherland Sharks.
Following their hard-fought effort against Wollongong FC, whereby United lost their captain and played the final 25’ minutes with ten-men, Abbas Saad’s team performed admirably as they denied Wollongong – and John Turner – a first round win in the Premier League.
Sutherland Sharks’ new boss Brian Brown has managed to organise his troops in a great manner with much promised by the Sharks in this early part of the season.
Captain George Souris’ experience at the back of the park is certainly leading the way for the team, meanwhile Shane Lyons has been instrumental with his great speed out of midfield.
Brown will also be hoping to have the services of talented midfielder Nick Stavroulakis back this weekend. Stavroulakis failed to take part in much of the pre-season with the Sharks due to injury, though the player with European domestic football experience will add extra strength to an already impressive midfield unit.
The two ‘new’ Premier League outfits, Macarthur Rams and West Sydney Berries, will lock horns at Campbelltown Sports Stadium. Both sides produced heroic performances against Marconi Stallions and Sydney Olympic respectively in the opening round, with the latter’s second-half run against Olympic a true shock to the early season form guide.
On Sunday, Manly United FC will look to their impressive strike-force – with much attention placed on Round 1 hat-trick hero Robbie Cattanach – to secure a first-up home win.
Manly FC was very impressive against Bankstown City in their 3-0 away win, despite missing a number of regular starters.
Blacktown City’s title defence kicked-off in a not so good way against Sydney United.
Ken Schembri’s side was outplayed by an impressive Reds outfit, though will be hoping to see even more from their talented number 10 – Leo Carle.
Carle scored an absolute screamer against Sydney United – the only real positive to come out of a lacklustre team performance.
At Lambert Park, A.P.I.A.-Leichhardt Tigers will be after their first win for 2008.
The Tigers have been hit with a long-list of injuries, though will need to raise the bar against Bankstown City this weekend – Peter Tsekenis’ side also looking to redeem themselves after a heavy home loss against Manly United.
In the final match of the round, the great rivalry between two great NSW sides continues.
Sydney United and Marconi Stallions will face off at Sydney United Sports Centre between two former rival National Soccer League clubs.
With much at stake for both sides, Sydney United will enter the encounter with the big scalp of Blacktown City Demons under their belt, though Marconi did get one over their neighbours in the third-place play-off in the Johnny Warren Cup just over one-week ago.
The Stallions however will welcome back a couple of players including star striker Tolgay Ozbey and defender Wade Oostendorp.
