Sutherland Sharks hope to return to winning ways on Saturday evening as the team from the Shire play host to Wollongong Community FC in the opening match of Round 16.
The Sharks are win-less since the Round 11 defeat of Penrith-Nepean United and have since lost their hold on fourth-spot.
Sutherland will take some heart from their strong showing against Sydney United last weekend as the side will again look to the speedy Panny Nikas out of midfield for inspiration. Ben Spruce's goals in recent weeks - along with an emphatic win against Marconi in Round 4 of the Tiger Turf Cup - has the Sharks on the right track for a return to the winner's list, though some better finishing is required by their strikers.
Wollongong Community FC's season has failed to kick-start after much promise in recent weeks. The side has welcomed back Lachlin Cahill, along with new signings James Monie and James Vaughan, though the number of wins this season still amount to one; the side sitting in last place on the League ladder. Despite the Sharks improvements in their last two outings, WCFC perhaps has their best chance of the season to get one over the Shire side this Saturday evening, as the added pressure will arguably be on the shoulders of the home-side.
At Bonnyrigg Sports Club the White Eagles face a real test to their playoff credentials when Phil Moss' Manly United FC visit. Brian Brown's influence on the Bonnyrigg squad has worked wonders as the side sits within striking distance of a finals-berth, an astonishing achievement should the side get there. Brown has been busy on the transfer market, bringing in six new faces for the White Eagles final assault on finals football. The additions of attack minded players Jay Lucas, Ryan Baldacchino, Dejan Zivkovic, Vukasin Ristic and Carlos Guimaraes, along with defender Graeme Forbes have already paid dividends, as Manly United FC face a mighty challenge on Saturday.
Phil Moss' men have hit a slight form slump in recent weeks; affected largely by the lay-off due to wet weather, though the side is still unbeaten in their last eight League outings. Moss will certainly look to use this statistic in his side's favour as the side still does boast the best defensive record in the competition, though strikers Robbie Cattanach and Giosue Sama will need to find some consistency in-front of goal if the side is to maintain the pressure on Sydney United in top-spot on the league ladder.
At Marconi Stadium, the second-leg of the Capitol Hill trophy will be played between the Stallions and Sydney United. The League leaders (Sydney United) carry a narrow 2-1 lead following the Round 5 triumph at Edensor Park, the match carrying double significance with both sides performing strongly in the League this season.
Sydney United's slip-ups against Manly United FC and Blacktown City Demons seem to be forgotten, though a number of missed chances in the recent 2-2 home draw against Sutherland will have coach Ante Milicic slightly disappointed. The Reds have welcomed back Petar Markovic to the side after a long-spell on the sidelines through injury, meanwhile the 'deadball' capabilities of youngster Andrija Petkovic will have the Stallions on alert should a free-kick be conceded around the penalty-area.
Marconi Stallions too have been affected by the wet weather in recent weeks with matches rescheduled - one still to come against Penrith-Nepean. The side was out of sorts for large spells in the recent outing against Bankstown City, though could only have themselves to blame following a poorly conceded second goal against the Lions. Coach Lee Sterrey will again look to playmaker Ali Al-Hilfi to lead the reigns in the attacking third, with striker Alex Canak expected to find the back of the net. The Stallions have been extremely well organised in defence and will need to make right of the lapses in the defensive third last weekend if the Bossley Park outfit is to get one over their neighbours on Saturday evening.
On Sunday the Sydney Tigers will hope their fortunes change against Blacktown City Demons after dropping points in the dying minutes of their last two matches. The Tigers will need to do the job without the suspended duo of Mark Byrnes and Michael West, though the addition of former International Nick Rizzo to the midfield has certainly added a further attacking threat to the side's arsenal.
The Demons too have been hit by a run of inconsistent form as the side again failed to take maximum points at home last weekend, this time against West Sydney Berries. In what promises to be a season defining match for both sides, the Demons will require the most out of experienced campaigners Adam Kwasnik in the attacking third and Luke Casserly in defence. A loss for either side will almost certainly end their chances of finals football for 2009.
At Lidcombe Oval, the hard-working West Sydney Berries face Bankstown City in their best moment of form this season. John Calleja's men have secured ten-points from their last four outings, moving the side up to seventh-spot on the ladder; four-points behind fifth-placed Sutherland. Much of the Berries success can be attributed to the fine cohesion between Kosta Lagoudakis and Aheleas Kotsopoulos out of midfield with Dimitri Zakilas; the latter has certainly played his part with a number of important goals along the way.
The Berries host an in-form Bankstown City side that is coming off a very impressive seven days. The side has knocked off both Sutherland Sharks and Marconi Stallions in League action, meanwhile Sydney United were sent packing in the Tiger Turf Cup by the Jensen Park outfit. Peter Tsekenis' additions of Greg Owens and Daniel Severino to the squad have made a huge impact, as have the returns of both George Nohra and Phillip Makrys in the middle of the park. The Lions though will be without suspended striker Hussein Salameh, a huge loss in the attacking third for Bankstown City.
At Belmore Sports Ground Sydney Olympic supporters will expect to see their side pick up maximum points to mount their charge for a strong finish to the season. The Blues have lacked consistency throughout the campaign, though the signs have been positive in recent weeks. Mark Bosnich's presence in defence, along with Mirko Jurilj's fine performances have clogged up a leaking backline, meanwhile Matthew Mayora's goalscoring feats have been exceptional to-date. A start for Anthony Doumanis out of midfield would be expected following a strong substitute's performance at Wollongong last weekend, meanwhile Chris Triantis' pace and flair will again be called upon by coach Nick Theodorakopoulos.
Their opposition, Penrith-Nepean United, need points to stop their slide down the table though coach Ian Gillan will feel quietly confident following his side's recent away trip to the Sydney Tigers where Penrith-Nepean picked up maximum points. Gillan has had a long list of players absent in recent weeks, though hopes to bank on experienced players Evangelos Petratos and Ante Juric to guide his side. Tayfun Buyukkopru and Mitchell Long are two other names that have been missing through injury; names that would certainly add fuel to Penrith-Nepean's fire for the run home this season.
