Sydney United holds a four-point lead over closest rival Bankstown City following Round 18 TeleChoice Premier League matches.
Despite the Reds being held to a 1-1 draw by the Sydney Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday, the side maintains a healthy lead in the run home to the finals-series.
The Reds hit the front against the Tigers courtesy of a fine Davor Bajsic strike from the edge of the penalty-area on 38' minutes before relinquishing the lead moments after the second-half re-start courtesy of a well-taken Robbie Younis strike. A dominant second-half spell by the Reds failed to produce a winner, as the home-side too created scoring chances to win the match.
On Saturday evening, Marconi Stallions kept the pressure on the teams above them with a hard-fought 2-0 win against Wollongong Community FC. Without a doubt, it wasn't the Stallions best performance of the season, and the visitors too may well be disappointed to return back to Wollongong without anything to show for their efforts.
The Stallions hit the front midway through the first-half as Ousmane Toure was quickest to react to a poorly dealt with effort by WCFC defender Dave Able. The Cotè D'Ivoire import pounced to slot the ball past Alex Augusto in the WCFC goal. WCFC again produced a defensive error to allow Alexander Canak to dispossess Alfredo Esteves and score past Augusto with a fine effort to seal the 2-0 win.
At Bonnyrigg Sports Ground, Bankstown City's immense moment of form continued with another strong showing in their 2-0 win against the White Eagles. Peter Tsekenis' side has continued to improve and their performances, and results, deservedly sit the side in the Top-Two after Round 18. Hussein Salameh stole the show with another exceptional display for the Lions; the striker caught the White Eagles' defence napping on 22' minutes as he weaved past three defenders before slotting past Nenad Vekic with aplomb for the opening goal. The Lions remained in control of proceedings, despite the home-side's best efforts to get back into the match. All hopes of snatching a point though ended in the 87' minute as a long-range shot from Philip Makrys bounced awkwardly in-front of a lunging Nenad Vekic before finishing in the back of the net.
West Sydney Berries and Sutherland Sharks cancelled each-other out at Lidcombe Oval following a first-half goal fest on Saturday. Berries captain Aheleas Kotsopoulos and Kosta Lagoudakis had their side two goals up with a quick-fire double inside the first 20' minutes, though the Sharks responded in equally impressive fashion via Neil Jablonski and Brad Boardman with two goals in the space of one minute. A midfield battle ensued in the second period, though clear-cut goalscoring chances were limited as the sides settled for a share of the spoils.
At Gabbie Stadium, Sydney Olympic picked up a vital win against Blacktown City to keep their finals-series football hopes alive. The Blues were without former Socceroo goalkeeper Mark Bosnich though his replacement, Zain Zanelli, performed well following a nervy start. Strike-pairing Matthew Mayora and Tolgay Ozbey combined well to release the latter on goal; the former Blacktown City striker made no mistake with his ferocious finish. The only note of concern for Nick Theodorakopoulos' men was an injury to captain Peter Zorbas. The Blues' skipper was forced to leave the playing field after 11' minutes.
Penrith-Nepean United added a further blow to Manly United FC's chances of securing a spot in the finals-series with a 2-0 win at Cook Park in St. Marys. The home-side weathered the Manly United storm in the early exchanges and played their way into the tie when Michael Dowling headed the side ahead via a Tayfun Buyukkopru free-kick.
Youngster Dimitrios Petratos ensured his side would take home maximum points with a fine finish to keep Penrith-Nepean's slim hopes of finals football alive.
