Round 19 TeleChoice Premier League action kicks off on Saturday evening with Blacktown City Demons playing host to Penrith-Nepean United.
The Demons have lost their way in recent weeks with some inconsistent results laying to rest any last hope of finals football, meanwhile Penrith-Nepean still maintains a chance of sneaking into the finals race with a strong finish to the season.
The Demons will need to recover quickly from the loss against Sydney Olympic last weekend, and will have a Tiger Turf Cup quarter-final on Tuesday 7th of July, 2009, before meeting Penrith-Nepean.
The visitors fought gallantly to add the scalp of Manly United FC to their list of conquered opponents, though newly appointed coach (player coach) Ante Juric's side will need to be in top-form to realise what will be a remarkable achievement should finals football be secured.
At Seymour Shaw, Sutherland Sharks need points to get their run home to the end of the regular season back on track following some indifferent form recently. Arguably one of the smallest playing squads in the competition, Robbie Stanton's side will require the experience of George Souris, Neil Jablonski and Brad Boardman to steer the side back on course. Recent performances have been impressive at times, though some defensive lapses have proved costly.
Sydney Tigers' fortunes have not been rosy this season, though Luke McGuire's men will be eager to finish the regular season strongly. Robbie Younis returned to the scorer's sheet last weekend against Sydney United in a match where the side certainly did create chances to take the win. Once more, the playing making genius of Nick Rizzo - and Franco Parisi - will be needed in the attacking third.
At Marconi Stadium, Lee Sterrey's Stallions need a win to keep their aspirations of a Top-Two finish alive. The side has played some exceptional football this season, although recent results have not been free-flowing. The hard-fought win against Wollongong Community FC will have the side confident ahead of the West Sydney Berries clash - Alexander Canak arguably one of the side's most lively performers in recent weeks.
The Berries season has been impressive to-date, though the recent loss to Bankstown City - and a draw with Sutherland Sharks - renders the side's chances of finals football a little out of reach. Coach John Calleja will need to have his experienced players on song for this clash; Aheleas Kotsopoulos a concern after suffering a serious injury to his right arm last weekend.
On Sunday at Hooka Creek Park in Wollongong, WCFC meets Manly United FC in a match carrying equal importance for both sides - for two very different reasons.
The home-side is in desperate need to make something of a rather difficult season that has produced only one league win, meanwhile the northern beaches outfit risk slipping out of the Top-Five following a barren run of results. On a positive note for Phil Moss' men, the side still has two 'catch-up' matches to complete, though recent performances do have Manly United supporters somewhat nervy as the regular season nears its end.
At Jensen Park, an exciting encounter is expected between a red-hot Bankstown City Lions and Sydney Olympic. The Lions have been in exceptional form with Hussein Salameh running amuck in the attacking third. The striker has been in great touch with the assistance of Hussein Akil and Daniel Severino, meanwhile the defensive third has found the consistency that was lacking in the first half of the season.
The Blues on the other hand need points to maintain their positive moment of form. The side still has some work to do if finals football is to become a reality, though with the fine goal scoring exploits of Tolgay Ozbey and Matthew Mayora on-deck, Bankstown City best not underestimate Nick Theodorakopoulos' men.
In the match of the Round, Sydney United plays host to Bonnyrigg White Eagles on Sunday at Sydney United Sports Centre. The Reds have performed admirably thus far and deservedly occupy top-spot on the ladder. Ante Milicic and David Zdrilic again have the experience to lead their side to victory, with Elsid Barkhousir and Luka Glavas in great touch of late. In the defensive third, the experience of captain Joe Vrkic and Damon Collina stand the side in good stead, as does the reassurance offered by talented goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic who has continued to develop into a fine goalkeeping talent.
The White Eagles need a win to keep their chances of finals football alive, a prospect that cannot be put beyond Brian Brown's men. 'Bomber' Brown has brought an enormous amount of confidence to the side since his arrival at the helm; the side currently sitting in seventh-spot, three-points outside the Top-Five. Coming off consecutive losses against Manly United FC and Bankstown City in the Tiger Turf Cup and TeleChoice Premier League matches respectively, there is no better fixture than this for Bonnyrigg to get one over their fierce rival and resurrect their finals push.
