Round three of the TeleChoice Premier League kicks off on Saturday evening with 'new boys' Bonnyrigg White Eagles in search of their first win in the competition.
Following two losses from the opening two matches, Blagoja Kuleski's men have the bonus of a home match at Bonnyrigg Sports Ground, though their opponent happens to be pre-season favourite Sydney Olympic.
Bonnyrigg were run ragged against Sydney Tigers in Round 1, before an almost perfect first-half performance against Wollongong Community FC last weekend turned into a total disaster as David Petrovic & Co. squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2.
Sydney Olympic's confidence will be on the rise following their impressive performance against Sydney Tigers. Tolgay Ozbey and Matthew Mayora continue to improve their partnership in the attacking third, meanwhile the defensive line led by Mirko Jurilj remains one of the League's strongest.
At Penrith's CUA Stadium, Penrith-Nepean United too will be looking for their opening win of the campaign. An impressive first-half performance against West Sydney Berries in Round 2 stands Ian Gillan's side in good stead for a strong showing this season, though much will depend on the side's experienced campaigners. Evangelos Petratos and Ante Juric were stand out performances in the 2-2 draw, and more of the same will be needed to knock-over the visiting Sydney Tigers.
The Tigers looked very strong in pre-season and are, for many, a strong shout for the championship this season. Despite the loss to Sydney Olympic at Belmore last weekend, the Tigers impressive array of talent across the park has Paul Okon's men as favourites for this match. Sydney Tigers' new signing Michael Hawrysiuk will sit out the match following his two yellow cards last weekend.
At Cromer Park, one of the most consistent sides of recent times Manly United FC will be out for three-points after two draws from their opening matches. Manly United stood strong against Marconi Stallions in Round 2, surviving over an hour with ten-men to grind out a 1-1 draw. Coach Phil Moss will welcome back Andrew Mailer to the line-up against West Sydney Berries, though Luke Reading will be in the stands serving a suspension. Robbie Cattanach will carry Manly's goalscoring hopes, with youngster Josh Sama to still show his full potential in this early part of the season.
West Sydney Berries will be without their influential captain Aheleas Kotsopoulos through suspension; arguably coach John Calleja's biggest headache heading into the Cromer Park showdown. Kotsopoulos was the architect behind both of the Berries goals against Penrith-Nepean; his presence will be missed.
On Sunday evening, Blacktown City Demons host Marconi Stallions at Gabbie Stadium in a must win match for both sides. The Stallions are eager to keep pace with the top sides, meanwhile Blacktown City's ambitions to change their fortunes after a disappointing 2008 campaign must make a positive turn in this clash.
The Demons stern performance at Seymour Shaw saw the side pick-up a precious point; the side's fighting characteristics will be eagerly sought after by coach Ken Schembri.
Lee Sterrey's Stallions created enough chances against Manly United in Round 2 to win two matches, though a lack of luck in-front of goal denied the Stallions the three-points. These two sides have constantly produced exciting encounters, Sunday evening promises to do the same.
Bankstown City return home following a disappointing 1-0 loss to League leader Sydney United. The Lions are eager to make Jensen Park a fortress this season and following the Round 1 win against Wollongong Community FC, Sutherland Sharks pose a firm test. The Sharks too have been a little 'light' in the attacking third with the likes of Brad Boardman and Matt Hall still finding their feet. Bankstown City will aim to subdue their opponents in midfield with George Nohra and Phillip Makrys forming a strong partnership; the Sharks on the other hand will again be without the skillful Nick Stavroulakis following the midfielder's groin strain in the opening Round of the season.
The final match of the Round poses an exciting encounter between the high-flying Wollongong Community FC and League leader Sydney United.
Wollongong showed what they are capable of in their opening Round narrow loss against Bankstown City, though after a slow start against Bonnyrigg in Round 2, proved that they have the fight within them to repeat the achievements of Wollongong Wolves last season.
Sydney United has a new lease on life at the club with the return of club great Ante Milicic. The former Socceroo's first player/coach gig has commenced in emphatic fashion with two wins, against strong opponents, sending the Reds straight to the top of the ladder. The Reds also have another club favourite, striker David Zdrillic in the fold, meanwhile former Perth Glory striker Luka Glavas has started the season like a house on fire with three goals from two matches.
It will be all to play for at John Crehan Park on Sunday.
