Sydney United has maintained its two-point lead at the top of the TeleChoice Premier League ladder following Round 3 matches.
The Reds continued their unbeaten run with an away win at Wollongong Community FC, a strong sign of the Edensor Park outfit's serious title challenge for 2009. The win was made the more special, considering the difficult challenge posed to the Reds by the home-side. Wollongong were more than competitive all over the park, and will perhaps feel a little hard done by with the 1-0 loss.
Dominic Rossi's deflected effort separated the two sides, leaving Sydney United with a two-point lead over second-placed Marconi Stallions.
At Jensen Park, Bankstown City battled to a 4-2 win against Sutherland Sharks, despite the Lions starting the match with nine regular first-teamers absent. The 're-invented' midfield, led by Shane Webb, produced a spirited performance to secure an important home win. Former Lebanon Olympic team International Salameh Hussein was the star on the night, scoring twice following Ibrahim Haydar's header that drew the Lions level after Panagiotis Nikas hit the Sharks ahead early.
Sharks substitute, under-20 player, Matthew Villazon pulled one back for Sutherland though the ten-man outfit - following Christopher Price's red card - conceded an injury-time goal scored by Hussein Akil.
At Gabbie Stadium in Blacktown, an evening of celebration for the club turned into despair as Damien Foxe's 300th appearance for the club ended in defeat.
First-half goals to Nahuel Arrarte and Erick Anabalon set-up the Stallions win, before Iraqi import Ali Al-Hilfi rounded out the 3-0 win 10' minutes from the end.
The win sends Lee Sterrey's Marconi into second-spot, two-points adrift of League leader Sydney United.
On Saturday evening, Penrith-Nepean United and Sydney Tigers was the only match completed following huge storms across Sydney. After the downpour, the match went ahead, and it was a poor Sydney Tigers performance that had all the spectators talking. Tipped as one of the favourites for a shot at the title this season, the Sydney Tigers were unrecognisable as a strong, and well organized, Penrith-Nepean United took the points courtesy of Tayfun Buyukkopru. The striker's deceiving cross-turn-shot caught the Tigers rear-guard unaware, as the ball finished inside the far post.
At Cromer Park, Manly United FC led West Sydney Berries 1-0 courtesy of a Michael Lloyd-Green goal after 23' minutes. The horrendous weather conditions though brought the match to a halt in the 40' minute; referee Kris Griffith-Jones confirming the abandonment of the match moments later.
At Bonnyrigg Sports Club, the White Eagles v Sydney Olympic match was called off before it even began due to the weather conditions. The White Eagles desperate search for their first win since returning to the top-flight in the NSW Football Competition will need to wait another week, as will Sydney Olympic need to wait for their chance to consolidate their first win in Round 2.
