The Australian duo squared off, with Jedinak lining up in a deep midfield role in a 4-5-1 formation, while Luongo was part of a three-man midfield for QPR.

Both played full games and impressed in their roles, earning praise from their respective managers Steve Bruce and Ian Holloway.

Villa have won seven of their past eight matches, coinciding with Jedinak’s return to the side after injury, keeping alive their faint playoffs hopes.

“Big Mile has put his boots on again,” Bruce said.

“He has been one of the big keys for us in terms of the way he leads the team and protects his centre-backs.

“I have to say he’s been terrific. He can play centre-half as well, which is a big plus too.”

Luongo missed QPR’s 1-0 loss to Derby County on the weekend after dropping out of the Socceroos side to face UAE earlier in the week but returned in style.

“I don't like singling out individuals but Massimo was outstanding,” Holloway said.

“He was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch.

“He showed what a good player he is tonight.”

Elsewhere in the Championship, Bailey Wright put in a full shift as Bristol City were hammered 5-0 by former club Preston North End.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Kenny Dougall played a full game and Craig Goodwin was a 72nd minute sub as Sparta Rotterdam lost 3-0 at Heerenveen.
