Terry knows anything less than a victory against the side ranked 110th in the world will leave England with a mountain to climb in their bid to qualify for Austria and Switzerland in 12 months' time.

The weekend results of the other main group challengers have increased the pressure on events in Tallinn with England now five points adrift of leaders Croatia and also trailing Israel and Russia.

But Terry believes the encouraging performance in the 1-1 draw against Brazil at the new Wembley was a step in the right article although he concedes England are still not the finished article.

Terry told PA Sport: "This is my crucial game as captain. Coming here to Estonia is a must-win game - not only this one but the many games after this, are must win.

"We need to come here and pick up three points and I think we need to win every game from now on. With results the other day not going our way, we need to make sure we are doing our bit and the least we can do is win.

"I think we have got to build on the Brazilian game. It was a step in the right direction. That is something we have been looking for.

"But we are still a long way from where we want to be and where our targets are. Our targets are to make it to the Euro 2008 finals.

"I think there is still a lot to give as a team collectively. We are trying our best to work on that. Our performance against Brazil was a lot better and something we've been after for quite a while now. We are close to getting there."

Terry has urged the England fans to be patient if they fail to make an early breakthrough against Estonia who have lost all six of their qualifiers without scoring a single goal.

Many of the England supporters turned on McClaren and his players during the last qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona in March even though England came away with a 3-0 win.

Terry said: "It is important the fans stay patient if we don't score an early goal. It is vital. Andorra sat behind the ball and made it difficult for us.

"Of course, it will be great if we can get an early goal and maybe we can kick on from there and Estonia will then maybe have to come out a little bit after that.

"But if we don't it is important for us defensively as well that we don't go slinging loads of men forward and maybe giving them the chance to catch us on the counter attack.

"We need to be patient and wait for the right opportunity and hope the fans are patient as well."

Terry also spelt out his determination to keep a clean sheet and cut out the occasional defensive errors England have been prone to in recent games.

The Chelsea skipper said: "We are hoping they won't be repeated and myself and the other defensive lads will be doing our best to stop anything going by us.

"We will do anything we can not to concede a goal and that's key because it is important our front and midfield players get a goal and take the pressure off us a little bit as well."
