The England captain has been linked with a British record move to big-spending Manchester City, with the Londoners having already rejected formal interest from Mark Hughes' men.

Ancelotti was adamant when he first arrived at the club that Terry was a "symbol" of Chelsea and must be kept, and when asked again about the player's future on their pre-season tour of the United States, he said: "We have to wait and for some people, it's a problem to wait.

"But for sure, Terry will stay at Chelsea - we never had a problem. You have to have trust in me."

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba - who looks set to stay with the club after his own future was in doubt earlier this summer - added: "He's our captain and we need him. We know he's going to stay with us."

Meanwhile, midfielder Frank Lampard does not think his club need to match City's spending to overhaul Manchester United as Premier League champions.

"I don't think it is a necessity now for us to go out and spend a ridiculous amount of money trying to find the perfect signing," he told the Sunday Mirror.

"Of course, there's a couple of players out there who would add a lot to this team.

"But there are millions of players who would not add much to this squad because we are strong across the board."

Former Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink expects Terry to remain with the London club.

The Dutchman, who led the club in a caretaker capacity from February until the end of the season before returning to his full-time role as Russia coach, told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "In modern times it might be possible, on the other hand John has openly declared that he started his career there at Chelsea and he would like to end it (there) as well.

"It depends always on the circumstances within the club and City have a lot of ambition. They want to be competitive with the top four.

"I haven't spoken with John, but if the team is competitive enough there shouldn't be any concern at Chelsea."

Asked why Terry had not simply given a public declaration of his intention to stay at Chelsea, Hiddink added: "I think he has said it before when I was there. Sometimes I have the same situation when people said to me 'will you stay, will you stay?' and in the end sometimes you don't answer."

Former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, now at City after he was tempted by a big money offer, is confident Terry will also be lured to Eastlands.

He told the Mail on Sunday: "I think there is a big possibility John will join us.

"People didn't believe six months ago that Carlos Tevez or myself would be playing here.

"We have come to Manchester City to be the big team. Why shouldn't John be persuaded to come here, too?"
