Reports in the UK says the long running contract saga has now come an end with the megamoney pay packet.

But the central defender now faces another fitness fight after he reportedly broke a toe on his right foot during the team's pre-season friendly against Suron Bluewings.

He was missing from the team line-up for several of Chelsea's game last season when they leaked goals that may have cost them the Premiership.

Chelsea already face a defensive crisis with Wayne Bridge ruled out by a hip op, and Ashley Cole still facing a long road back to full fitness.

Earlier, Terry admitted he wasn't taking his first team place for granted next season.

He has forged a successful partnership at the back with Ricardo Carvalho over the past three seasons but the signing of Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim from Bolton and the recall of Glen Johnson from a season-long loan at Portsmouth means the pair could come under pressure for their first-team places.

However, the 26-year-old is adamant he is savouring the challenge.

"It's very exciting when you know you've got players behind you always pushing," Terry said. "You can't let a performance go astray. If you do the manager or the other players behind you are going to be knocking at your door. So every game is vitally important to keeping your place.

"No-one is safe, no-one at all. The manager made that quite clear to me when he gave me the armband. I certainly know that with Chelsea and England and I definitely won't be taking that for granted this season.

"It's about working hard and that is what this pre-season is about. It's about coming over here for two weeks of good double training and going back and making sure that I'm ready."

Terry played for 45 minutes alongside Johnson in the early hours of Wednesday morning against Korean side Suwon Bluewings before making way for Carvalho and Ben Haim as Chelsea went on to win 1-0 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, thanks to an 80th-minute strike from Didier Drogba.

England captain Terry spoke afterwards of his confidence that he would sign a new contract with Chelsea before the start of the season although he conceded that with two years left to run on his present deal there was no immediate rush.

"Bruce Buck, the chairman, summed it up really," Terry said. "They could take a year, they could take longer but I'm very positive and fingers crossed."

Terry was also hoping his predecessor as England skipper would prove his fitness in time to make his debut for the Los Angeles Galaxy back at the Home Depot Center on Saturday night.

David Beckham is currently in a race against time in his bid to recover from a troublesome ankle injury picked up on England duty against Estonia in June and aggravated in his final appearance for Real Madrid.

"It will be nice (to play against him) and hopefully his ankle's okay to play. Fingers crossed because it will be a great occasion for everyone if he plays.

"There'll be 27,000 here, it's a lovely stadium and this is a chance to come over here and show what we can do as well. We would have liked to have scored a few more goals tonight but we've stayed undefeated."

Terry also paid tribute to the atmosphere generated on Chelsea's three-game pre-season tour in California. Of the training camp, Terry said:

"It's very good actually. It's a great time to get away, we have some new signings coming in and we're living in each other's pockets 24 hours a day, which is good. We get to know each other inside out off the pitch as well as also on the pitch with the hard work we do with the manager. It's a chance to really get to know each other."
