Limitations placed on fan behaviour for this month’s World Cup qualifier between Thailand and Australia in Bangkok have been lifted.
Thailand is in a state of mourning following the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej which prompted the Thai government and the Football Association of Thailand to make several requests to fans attending the November 14 match in Bangkok.
The Thai Government and FAT requested fans wear neutral colours such as black, white or grey, that musical instruments such as drums and whistles not be taken into the venue and for there to be no chanting or cheering.
However, they have changed stance with fans now able to wear colours, use cheering equipment, bring banners inside the stadium, sing and cheer as well as “conduct joyful activities both inside and surrounding areas of the stadium” during the the match at Rajamangala Stadium.
“Following the announcement from the Thai Cabinet made on 1 November 2016, the restrictions on entertainment activities, including sports organisation, shall be lifted on 14 November 2016 after the completion of the first 30 days of mourning period,” deputy secretary of the Football Association of Thailand Patit Suphaphongs said in a statement.
A member of the FFA Fan Engagement team will travel to Bangkok to work with embassy staff to help supporters understand and appreciate the situation.
“We have been liaising on a daily basis with the Australian Embassy and the Football Association of Thailand to ensure our players, staff and fans are aware of the sensitive nature of the mourning in Thailand and although these restrictions have been lifted for matchday we will continue with plans to respect the people of Thailand," FFA CEO David Gallop said.
“FFA is committed to ensuring that all members of the Caltex Socceroos delegation are aware of their responsibilities while in Thailand and we will also share information with registered tour groups who will be taking fans to Bangkok for the match."
The lifting of limitations is expected to prompt more Australians fans to travel to and attend the match.
