Following Adam le Fondre's arrival in Sydney with a reputation for being a goal scorer in England, we look at 10 non-marquee foreign imports that left their mark on the A-League.
1. Besart Berisha

While the Albanian signed on as Melbourne Victory’s marquee player in the 2014-15 season, the controversial forward began his A-League career as one of Brisbane Roar’s five foreign visa players. Under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, Berisha went on to have a impressive season for Roar scoring his debut goal against Sydney FC and grabbing four in a 7-1 thrashing of Adelaide United. The striker finished the season top goal scorer with 19 goals and was Brisbane’s hero in the A-League grand final as he nabbed two late goals to hand Roar the dunny-seat. While the Albanian's following season wasn't as successful, he still finished on 14 goals and took Roar to the semifinals. Berisha was once again a hero in the 2014 A-League Grand Final scoring in Roar’s 2-1 extra time victory over Western Sydney, in a season where he scored 11 league goals. Two A-League titles later Berisha would make his deserved marquee move to Melbourne Victory.
2. Thomas Broich

An A-League legend, Thomas Broich was another international player brought in by Ange Postecoglou for the 2010-11 A-League season. By the end of the season, the German had claimed the Gary Wilkins Medal as Brisbane’s player of the season and become an A-League champion as Roar secured their first A-League championship. Broich remained at Brisbane for seven consecutive seasons where he became a three-time A-League champion and the only two-time Johnny Warren medallist, earning the honour in both the 2011-12 and 2013-14 A-League seasons. Never the most prolific scorer, the attacking midfielder had a knack for setting up his teammates with 66 assists over his A-League career, the most by any individual player. Broich was named Brisbane Roar’s international marquee in 2014 however, his four seasons beforehand had already solidified himself as a league icon.
3. Milos Ninkovic

The first ever Sydney FC player to win the Johnny Warren Medal, Ninkovic’s 2016-17 season saw one of the best individual performances of any player in an A-League season. Leading the Sky Blues to finish first on the league table netting nine goals himself, before scoring the deciding penalty in the 2017 Grand Final, the Serbian cemented himself as a club legend. The following season Ninkovic re-signed as Sydney's international marquee and again proved vital, leading Sydney to their second consecutive Premiership before they bowed out in the semifinals against Melbourne Victory.
4. Carlos Hernandez

The Cost-Rican brought flair and creativity to Melbourne Victory in 2007 when he signed on a two-year loan from his native country. The attacking midfielder was instrumental in Victory’s 2008-09 A-League championship win, scoring in both semi-final legs against Adelaide United. Hernandez’s influence was undeniable and he signed permanently for Melbourne in 2009 and in the following season, he was awarded the Johnny Warren Medal. Known for his ability to light up a crowd and score a screamer from range, Hernandez played 120 games for Victory.
5. Bruno Fornaroli

While the Uruguayan is about to begin his third season as Melbourne City’s international marquee player, he began his City career in the 2015-16 season as one of the foreign visa players. However, this was the defining season of his A-League career as he finished the league’s top goal scorer on 25 goals, the most goals by any individual in the A-League until Sydney’s Bobo broke the record last season. He also claimed City’s player of the season award and led then side to the semi-finals of the A-League. The striker became the fastest player to reach 30 A-League goals the following season, when he became City’s international marquee.
6. Adrian Mierzejewski

This one may be debatable as the Polish midfielder only played one season in the A-League, but what can’t be debated was the impact he had. The former Poland international led the Sky Blues to the A-League premiership last season and was awarded the 2017-18 Johnny Warren Medal as well as the A-League’s Player of the Year as voted by Fox Sports. He was awarded the Mark Viduka medal for the role he played in Sydney FC’s FFA Cup final win over Adelaide United, and his defining A-League moment came in the Sydney derby when he scored two in Sydney’s 5-0 win over their rivals. Despite only being in the A-League for a short time he definitely left his mark.
7. Guilherme Finkler

After suffering a rocky start to his Melbourne Victory career, and a season-ending injury midway through the 2012-13 season, the Brazilian began to hit his stride at the end of the 2013-14 season. Finkler scored a dramatic late goal against Sydney FC in that season’s elimination-finals, confirming his status as a fan favourite. Finkler signed on for another two seasons at Victory and played a vital role in their 2015 success, when they were crowned A-League Premiers, Champions and FFA Cup winners. Scoring seven goals and creating 10 assists the attacking midfielder was named in the 2014-2015 PFA Team of the Season. Guilherme would go on to join Wellington Phoenix as their marquee player.
8. Marcos Flores

An A-League journeyman, Marcos Flores played for Adelaide United, Melbourne Victory, Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets. Flores' greatest A-League season was 2010-11 when he provided Adelaide United with the skill and technique required to help the Reds secure 3rd position. Scoring nine goals throughout the season, the Argentine claimed the 2010-2011 Johnny Warren Medal. Flores’ reliability and tendency to create a chance out of nothing, saw him become a mainstay in the A-League making 43 appearances.
9. Milos Dimitrijevic

A mainstay for Sydney FC over four seasons, the Serbian was an integral part of the Sky Blues midfield. Part of the Sydney side that won both the Premiership and A-League championship in 2016-17, Dimitrijevic enjoyed his best A-League season in 2014-15 where he claimed Sydney FC’s Club Player of the Year, Player’s Player of the Year and Member’s Player of the Year, becoming the first player to win all three. The Serbian amassed 76 appearances for the Sky Blues and was a fan favourite among The Cove.
10. Cassio Oliveira

The Roberto Carlos of the A-League, the Brazilian left-back joined Adelaide United during the 2007-08 season and left a club legend five years later. Despite not enjoying any A-League silverware, the attacking full-back brought excitement and flair to the league. While rarely scoring for the Reds, when he did you knew it was going to make the highlight reel. Cassio was awarded Adelaide United’s Club Champion in both the 2007-08 and 2010-11 seasons and finished his Reds' career with 158 appearances across all competitions.
