While David Nugent and Jason Koumas have been tempted by the Premiership, but there is still plenty of talent outside the top flight.
Here we look at the 10 best players in the Championship.
GRZEGORZ RASIAK (Southampton): As well as being powerful in the air, Rasiak, who had a spell in the Premiership with Tottenham in 2005, has a quality touch and should score 20 goals in the Championship this season.
ANDY REID (Charlton): He may not look the part but Reid, who has previous experience at this level with Nottingham Forest, will dazzle the Championship with his clever footwork and intelligent passing.
CHRIS BRUNT (Sheffield Wednesday): Has consistently been linked with the Premier League and is said to have a £3million price tag on his head. Still only 22, Brunt has a hammer of a left foot and will score some memorable goals this term.
MARLON KING (Watford): His 22 goals were key in Watford's promotion the season before last. He will be keen to make up for an injury-plagued Premier League season and will again be among the top scorers in the division.
ROB HULSE (Sheffield United): Not the most prolific scorer but his size and hold-up play will be key if Sheffield United are to make an immediate return to the Premiership he will be a key man at Bramall Lane.
JAMIE CURETON (Norwich): Will be 32 by the time the season really gets under way but has been signed by the Canaries as a replacement for Rob Earnshaw and they will be expecting goals.
FREDDY EASTWOOD (Wolves): Managed 15 goals in a struggling Southend team last season and will surely thrive on the better service at Wolves after Mick McCarthy stumped up £1.5million to take him to Molineux.
CURTIS DAVIES (West Brom): If he stays, boss Tony Mowbray knows he has comfortably the best defender outside the Premiership, who has plenty of pace and power as well as an excellent positional sense.
JOBI McANUFF (Watford): Having cost almost £2million from Crystal Palace, he can play on either flank and, while he could score more regularly, he will certainly lay on plenty of goals for King and co.
MATT MURRAY (Wolves): The former England Under-21 goalkeeper's career has been blighted by injuries but recaptured his best form last term and will be fit for the new season after a shoulder problem.
