The departures of Manchester United and Chelsea from the FA Cup today continued an amazing year of shocks in the competition. Here we look at five other matches where the underdog had their day:
Blackburn 1 Coventry 4 (Third round)
Blackburn were expected to sweep past struggling Coventry when they met at Ewood Park in round three but in a jaw-dropping role reversal, they romped to victory courtesy of a Michael Mifsud double and goals from Elliott Ward and Dele Adebola.
Everton 0 Oldham 1 (Third round)
Despite fielding a slightly weakened side, Everton did not look like encountering too many problems from League One Oldham. But they were stunned by a speculative long-range shot from Gary McDonald and never recovered.
Bristol Rovers 0 Fulham 0 - Bristol Rovers won 5-3 on penalties (Third round replay)
Bristol Rovers were arguably unlucky not to win the first match at Craven Cottage after twice leading. It looked like their chance had gone, with Fulham expected not to make the same mistake twice. But they did and goalkeeper Steve Phillips emerged as the penalty shootout hero.
Derby 1 Preston 4 (Fourth round)
Derby's miserable Barclays Premier League form made defeat by Preston a possibility. But the manner of the victory by a side who were also struggling in their own division made people sit up and take notice. North End ran riot through Karl Hawley (2), Simon Whaley and Neil Mellor.
Liverpool 1 Barnsley 2 (Fifth round)
The biggest shock of the lot until today's extraordinary events, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez paid dearly for his rotation policy, resting both Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard. The hosts still had enough chances to win it but were dumped out by Brian Howard's last-gasp winner.
