Defoe's contract finishes at the end of next season and he has been urged to sign a new deal, with the club determined to avoid a situation where he could leave for nothing like Sol Campbell.

The England striker has not started a game this season but came off the bench in the UEFA Cup against Anorthosis Famagusta on Thursday and scored two spectacular goals.

Spurs fans were chanting for Defoe to be introduced against the Cypriots and he received a standing ovation when he was brought on.

"There has been a lot of things said during the summer over whether I am going to go," said the 24-year-old. "When the fans are like that with me I do not want to go anywhere."

Defoe was not even on the bench against Arsenal last Saturday and boss Martin Jol could not guarantee him a place in the starting XI against Bolton on Sunday.

"I said to myself I have got nothing to prove, but it has been difficult and I have just kept my head up and worked hard in training," said Defoe.

"In a way I think I am stronger now and I always said if I am given a chance I will try my best."

Defoe's lack of action has been particularly frustrating as Spurs have endured a sluggish start to the season, with just one Premier League victory.

Jol has introduced new faces into his team but he cannot understand why Bolton find themselves bottom the table with the same players as last season.

"They probably were unfortunate like we were against Manchester United, Arsenal and Fulham," said the Dutchman.

"With the talented players we have we are responsible to do better. They have a different sort of group - experienced, older.

"They play with the same players like last year so that will be difficult, and we have three or four different players.

"That is why I needed time, I don't know why they need more time."

Jol feels there is a greater pressure on his side to turn their season around.

"Is Bolton a big city? Is there a lot of pressure like in London? I don't know," said Jol.

Jol has been under intense pressure since club officials met Sevilla coach Juande Ramos last month, with hopes of Spurs competing in the Champions League next season after consecutive fifth-placed finishes.

Jose Mourinho's departure from Chelsea means the most high-profile coach in the game is on the market, but the club have distanced themselves from a move for him.

Jol hopes the win against Famagusta can spark a run of results to ease the pressure.

"Momentum is about the quality of the opponents," he said. "If you play against Arsenal or Manchester United after a win that is totally different.

"The only big disappointment was the first two games of the season because after that we always knew we had a very tough schedule.

"I felt we had momentum enough, we had chances against Manchester United and we should have won there."

Defoe also hopes Spurs have turned the corner.

He added: "It is a long season and it is still early days.

"Hopefully we can kick on now and we have been through the rough times.

"It has been difficult for everyone, including the boss and hopefully we can stick together and push on."
