Victory are locked in second-place ahead of their final game of the regular season on Friday night against Central Coast Mariners.

The Big V’s alternating defence has seen them concede the second-least amount of goals this season, on 31, as table-topping Sydney FC let 12 shots slip through.

And the personal battle with Sydney FC saw Victory lose all three meeting this season and fans are anticipating a Big Blue Grand Final.

Thomas was happy with himself personally, but was not prepared to give his team a pass mark.

“You look at how the season has gone, as a team I wouldn’t say it’s a pass because we are aiming to be top, so are we top? No,” Thomas asked rhetorically.

“This season could have been better but for me personally, my first full season as a No.1, fairly happy, learnt a lot and made mistakes but overall I thought I’ve had a fairly solid season.”

But on the prospect of the Sky Blues having this year’s title in the bag, Thomas brought up their 2015 Grand Final success.

He added: “I think two years ago when we played them there was similar talk about how strong they were and look how that finished.

“It’s not done, not dusted at all.

“At the end of the day they are where they are, they deserve to be where they are. The fact is we have lost three times against them, personally for me being at this club if you come into games fearing or expecting others to finish top then you’re at the wrong club.”

Victory have not won since their 4-1 smashing over Perth Glory last month and have been dealt two losses including the 3-0 shock loss to Wellington Phoenix at home a fortnight ago.

However Thomas took confidence from their goalless draw to Western Sydney Wanderers last week, coping after Daniel Georgievski received his second yellow card in the 53rd minute.

And Thomas was under no impressions they would give the struggling Mariners a hiding on Friday night.

“There’s no preconceived idea we’re going to turn up and just win,” he said.

“We’ve been taught lessons this year when we don’t turn up and we’re not 100 per cent, you can get beaten by any team in this league.

“For me personally I was very impressed with not only the back four but everyone in front of me (against Wanderers), even though we had the man sent off I didn’t have too much to do in that game.

“They were outstanding with last ditch tackles everywhere so with the strike force we have. If we defend like that then we can go all the way.”

He also said this season gave him the opportunity to feel composed between the sticks.

“In every aspect of the game, I was talking to coach Deano (Dean Anastasiadis), as you play more you might simplify the game,” Thomas explained.

“Some of my problems growing up as a young goalie was thinking too much about the game and being erratic... Now simplifying the game and mentally I’ve improved a lot.”
