Thompson made his Socceroos debut in the opening Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia in Jakarta in January, a match which ended in a 0-0 draw and saw the A-League-based team cop plenty of flak for not being up to international standard.

However, Thompson said there were plenty of mitigating circumstances in that performance, including a short preparation, a poor pitch and a determined home team spurred on by a massive home crowd.

The versatile Jet said that given the team would have been together for three days ahead of the match against Kuwait and the Socceroos will boast home advantage on a perfect surface, it was the ideal chance for the A-League's best to shine.

"It's good to have a bit more time together," he said. "We got in there yesterday and had a session and everyone was together this morning. We've got another one this afternoon. More preparation this time around can only help.

"This time around, we have to win, no questions asked. It's going to be a great surface and obviously playing on our home ground, it's an advantage to us, so there's no reason we can't came away with the three points."

Thompson said the experience of playing at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium was fantastic and that he felt he would be a lot less nervous if given the chance on Thursday.

"The nerves aren't there as much. If I'm given another chance I'd like to do better than I did last time. It was a great experience, last time in Indonesia and I want to take hat into this game and do better again," he said.

Regarded as one of the most consistent performers over his four years at Newcastle, Thompson felt he let himself down a little in his Australian debut. He believes he will be much-better suited to a more attacking style of game on Thursday.

He added: "I was given instructions more on the defensive side of things. I would have liked to have got forward a lot more. That's just how the game panned out I guessed.

"If given another opportunity, I want to defend as well as I did in Indonesia, but at the same time, put my two cents worth up front. If I can do that in this game, I'd be very happy."
