Dukes and Obafemi Martins entered the fray on the hour with the Magpies down a goal. They had an instant impact and Martins found the back of the net but the goal was disallowed for a handball.

In the FA Cup semi finals Tim Cahill's Everton took on Manchester United. Cahill looked most likely to score for Everton on several occasions but was denied twice by the Red Devil's substitute keeper Ben Foster.

The match finished 0-0 after extra time and Timmy stepped up to take the first shoot-out penalty but fired his effort over the cross bar. Dimitar Berbatov and Rio Ferdinand both missed their attempts however and Everton won through 4-2 on penalties to face Chelsea in the final.

On Saturday both of the Aussie goalkeepers kept clean sheets with Brad Jones's Middlesbrough hosting Mark Schwarzer's Fulham for a 0-0 draw.

Schwarzer ensured his former team remain mired in the drop zone by denying Tuncay Sanli with a diving save and pushing Stewart Downing's shot over the bar minutes later.

Lucas Neill played the full match for West Ham as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Aston Villa and keep seventh place on the table for a likely European spot.

On the continent Jason Culina was among the scorers as PSV Eindhoven took on his former club Ajax Amsterdam in an eight goal encounter. In the second half Culina cut inside from the edge of the penalty box, rounded a defender and threaded his shot through to score at the near post for PSV's fourth goal.

PSV won the match comfortably 6-2 and in the process, ensured compatriot Brett Holman's AZ Alkmaar will win the Dutch Eredivisie despite AZ losing to Vitesse Arnhem on Saturday with Holman left out of the squad.

Josh Kennedy finally made it back into the starting line-up for Karlsruhe against TSG Hoffenheim.

Kennedy made an impact on the half hour when he set up Sebastian Freis to score Karlsruhe's first goal in nine games. Karlsruhe drew 2-2 and are five points from safety at the bottom of the Bundesliga.

In the Turkish Super Lig Harry Kewell played the full ninety for Galatasary as they defeated Istanbul Buyuksehir BSK 1-0 through a Milan Baros goal.

Michael Petkovic continued a run of clean sheets for Sivasspor when they drew 0-0 with Konyaspor.

Mile Jedinak and James Troisi both started for Genclerbirligi against Trabzonspor but Mile earned a booking and Troisi came off in the 77th minute as Genclerbirligi lost 2 - 0.

Carl Valeri played the full shift for Grosseto as they triumphed 3-2 over Triestina in the Italian Serie B and Mark Rudan played the full shift for FC Vaduz in the Swiss Super League but he earned a booking as Vaduz lost at home to fellow cellar dweller Lucerne 2-1.

In the north, Luke Wilkshire played the full shift for Dinamo Moscow against FK Rubin Kazan in the Russian Premier League but Moscow went down 3-0. Goalkeeper Ante Kovic helped Elfsborg as they defeated Gefle IF 2-1 in Sweden.

Back to the UK and in Saturday's Scottish Premier League matches Scott McDonald was back in goal scoring form for Celtic when they downed Aberdeen 2-0.

McDonald played a one-two with fellow striker Jan Vennegoor and drove low past the keeper to score Celtic's second goal and secure the match for the Hoops.

Trent McClenahan played the full match for Hamilton against former Sydney FC manager Terry Butcher's Inverness. The Accies succumbed to a late goal to draw the match 1-1.

James Wesolowski's Dundee United hosted Danny Invincibile's Kilmarnock with both Aussies playing the full match. Invincibile set up Mehdi Taouil but Taouil's volley was saved well from the keeper and the game finished 0-0.

Nick Carle and Mile Sterjovski faced each other from the starting line-up when Crystal Palace hosted Derby with both teams playing to ensure their place in the Championship.

The tone for the match was set when Nick Carle was booked 15 seconds into the match. On the hour with the game still 0-0 Palace's Victor Moses was sent off for a second bookable offence when he fouled Mile Sterjovski.

Palace scored three minutes later however and held on to win 1-0.
