SOCCEROOS midfielder Tim Cahill showered national team coach Pim Verbeek with plaudits and compared him favorably to former Socceroo boss Guus Hiddink.

Speaking at a packed Sydney airport press conference following Australia's arrival back in in the country, the Everton midfielder gave an impassioned appraisal of the Rotterdam-born coach who has steered Australia to its second World Cup in a row and his first as a head coach.
"When Pim came to this team he spoke to every player. He's come in and his honesty and trust in the players. It's different because under Guus Hiddink you were given your job and that was it," said Cahill.
"I know that if I have a problem on the pitch or off the pitch, whether I've struggled to make it or if I've arrived a day late like I did in Dubai I can ring him and say I can't get there but I'll be there for sure, boss.
"You don't have to like your manager. You don't have to like who you work for but the good thing is that I love playing for this manager.
"He's done fantastic on the pitch and the boys respond to that. Whatever happens happens, but if you don't do your job and you don't play well, then you shouldn't be playing.
"Pim's very sensitive to the style of football we play and he's inherited a great bunch of boys and we've inherited a great manager and a staff..."
Quizzed on the differences in playing under the two Dutch managers, Cahill said it was sometimes difficult to penetrate the Hiddink persona, unlike Verbeek.
"Guus is a manager who's known and loved throughout the world," he said. "But it was difficult because you didn't understand his feelings and you didn't understand where you were at some times.
"I know [now] exactly what I'm doing. I know I'm going to run for 90 minutes and I know the boss is going to be beside me 100 percent.
"When you finish the game and he doesn't just shake the hand of the 11 players. He says to the 29 players there and to the staff and to the kitman he thanks everyone.
"I think something in Australian traits is appreciating everything. And with Pim he's obviously adapted to the Australian lifestyle well and the boys really appreciate it."
Verbeek added that he never regretted "for one second" signing on to coach Australia.
In other news, Scott Chipperfield and Mark Bresciano are unlikely to play on Wednesday night against Bahrain in the World Cup qualifier. Bresciano had a "logistic" problem with his family, said Verbeek, while Chipperfield has a foot problem.
Carl Valeri is also unavailable having rejoined his club Grosetto in its bid for promotion to Serie A. Russian based Luke Wilkshire joins up with the squad after being suspended for the Qatar clash last Saturday night.
