EXCLUSIVE: Auckland City youngster Tom Doyle is one of four Australasian players selected for trials in the UK through Nike’s The Chance talent search, it’s been announced.
The three other winners were Tomas Rogic, 17, an attacking midfielder from the ACT; Nikodin Matic, 18, a goalkeeper from NSW and Alon Blumgart, 18, a central midfielder from Victoria.
The Pacific trials were part of a global search by Nike for the best 100 unsigned players to head to the UK in January.
There they’ll trial for four days vying for eight contracts at the Nike Academy. For those eight players, it offers the opportunity to be scouted by professional clubs potentially from the EPL during the ten month Nike Academy contract.
Doyle (pictured centre with other Kiwi trialists), a left-sided defender, is on the fringes of first team football at NZFC powerhouse Auckland City.
The 18-year-old Kiwi hailed the influence of the Kiwitea Street club on his development.
“It’s one of the most professional atmospheres I can get at the moment. It’s really good for me,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com during the final trials at the AIS this week.
“It’s a great thing knowing that some of those players [at City] have been to the World Club Championships and other such big tournaments and they look after you and show you what to do and what not to do.”
Doyle added: “I’ve always dreamt of going out of New Zealand, but as a starting point Auckland City is perfect for me.”
After two months of trials across Australia and New Zealand the final 27 players were selected by head coach Ron Smith for a three day intense camp earlier this week.
Smith said the trials were useful not just for the four winners but for Australian football. “We’ve identified 20-odd players who’ve got a bit of talent.
“I’d be quite happy to make some recommendations to the A-League clubs and let them know these boys are there.”
