Australian striker Tomi Juric says he can be the man to score from open play for the Socceroos against the UAE on Tuesday night.
In Australia’s opening six games in the final phase of World Cup Qualifying, the Socceroos have relied heavily on set pieces to score goals.
And last time the Aussies put the ball in the back of the net from open play was in the 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia in October last year, courtesy of their striker Tomi Juric.
Juric has been in scoring form of late with three goals for his Swiss club FC Luzern in the month of March.
And after scoring twice in open play during the final phase of qualifying, the 26-year-old feels he can do it again for the Socceroos on Tuesday night.
“Yes, without a doubt," he said.
“You all saw the field in the last game (against Iraq), it was really, really hard for us to get the ball down, stroke the ball around the back and in midfield to create very good chances.
“But every time we play we create enough chances, it’s just a matter of time for us to get an opponent where we’re going to score three, four or five goals against them.”
With Australia now employing a new 3-4-3 system, Juric who plays as the lone striker, said he has faith in the players behind to provide him with the opportunities to score
“It’s the role you play in this formation,” he said.
“We have a few formations that we play like that.”
“It's a little bit of a difficult job. You have to stay really disciplined and patient in your forward progression and trust the boys in the midfield to create some chances for me.
“We’ve done that in the past and I can’t see any reason why we can’t do this again.”
With the Socceroos facing a must win scenario in the remaining games on the road to Russia 2018, the striker said the Aussies weren't feeling the weight of anticipation.
“Pressure comes with being expected to qualify for the World Cup and I don't see that being a bad thing,” he said.
“Qualifying for a World Cup is never meant to be easy. We play against these difficult nations in these types of difficult conditions and we do it quite well.
“When we come home and we play in front our fans, we always put on a good show and put on some good football.
"Most of the time we get a good result and I believe on Tuesday night we will do that.
“Playing at home in front of our fans, with our football, I expect us to dominate. I expect us to create chances and I expect us to win this game and get the three points.”
